right, i have a noise from the front wheels i think when turning left sounds metal on metal grinding. only happens at slow speeds. i took some air out of tyres and the noise was alot worse, done it nearly all the time slowing down, turning and braking except when accelarating or at a high speed. now i put the front front tyres up to 40 psi and it virtually elimated the noise.... could the type of tyre have an effect the car came with fullrun W speed rating brand new.

i know they should be michelin but pls dont say this just because they arn't unless you realy think it could be the problem.

Hasn't someone already suggested the wheel/tyre catching on something ? Cause this may be worth checking.

You won't be able to tell by jacking the car up you will have to carefully check for any signs of rubbing on the wheel arches or tyres.

I understand the steering racks have a small spacer to prevent full lock being acheived so as to stop the tyre rubbing, maybe this has dropped out and so you have slightly more lock. Or the tracking could be out on one side etc.

The only possibilities I can think of are ...

Rubbing of the wheel/tyre on the body work due to tracking or suspension alignment.
Rubbing of a trapped stone (or similar) in the caliper or behind the disk back-plate (don't think the vee has these).
Wheel bearing collapsing or loose.
Misalignment of the caliper and/or brake pads.

Thinking about my own experiences with other cars, your latest symptoms suggest a wheel bearing TBH. Slow speed metallic rubbing is consistant. This has been suggested already too hasn't it ?

Have you had these things checked out ?

Martin

evrything except the bearing has been checked i have been busy with the rest, tracking is being done this week, and i think the tyre is rubbing on the n/s rear of the wheel arch, i just wasn't sure on the rubbing of the wheel arches because the noise sounds metallic.

A dodgy wheel bearing should be quite easy to check.

Jack the car up so the wheel is off the ground. Then you can do a few checks ...

1) Rotate the wheel and check for mettalic rubbing or grinding sounds - there shouldn't be any of course.

2) Grab the top and bottom of the wheel/tyre and pull the bottom out and push the top in repeatedly (if that makes sense). There should be NO play at all, other than maybe some in the suspension travel.

3) Check for uneven brake pad wear as this can also be a sign of a dodgy bearing. In fact braking may also be uneven especially when driving and under steering, the sound may even change under braking.

A front bearing on my Toyota (in fact this has happened several times) went and the thing screeched like mad, especially when cornering or going slow. Brakes were also effected. I thought the wheel was gonna fall off ! All this happened in quite a short space of time. I had to replace the whole hub in the end cause the beating had spun the inner race of on the hub and so all part were scrap.

well when i bought the car the garage said they where replacing the brakes coz the pads had worn unevenly so probs a bearing?

Worn discs can be a problem.

Bearings can be a problem as some times only make noise under load.

What about rust ?

ahh there is none on the surface but i think there is on edge but would this cause it when only turning?

jack the wheel off the ground and give it a hard tug all around.see if there is any play. its def got to be the bearing. what else can it be?? sounds def like a bearing to me

it is back at the garage i bought it from now had it since tuesday and i "might get it back at the weekend" they can't find the problem.
ive had the car two weeks tomorrow and i have only really "had" it for 5 days :s :(
