clio v6 or PORSCHE 911 996 turbo

But if you want to get noticed when you go out you could just wear a fluffy chicken outfit.
Porsches are about the driver, like Tivs and Vee's just about any other enthusiast car. An audi TT, 350z, impreza, skyline, are all a common sight and capable performers but are a damp squib to drive. If I booked a holiday to the 'ring and it was raining when I got there in any of those cars it would not scare me - a tail-happy 911 turbo on the other hand is just waiting to give anyone a kicking when they run out of talent.
I've never driven a Vee personally but I imagine in bad weather you have to be 'on it' like you do with a porka, imo that is what the 911 and proper sports cars like it are all about, well that and beautiful timeless design classic and a wonderful bit of engineering - like the Vee. Nothing about road presence or how you are perceived by other motorists.

1 Ph1 Vee + 1 wet/damp Mas Du Clos track = HEAPS OF FUN!!

I love giving the car a good hiding in the wet. When you get out of it, it feels like youve driven the thing and not had ABS, ASC, TCS, AYC or any other A B to Z aid to help you out. I think pound for pound they are a great driving experience.

Where As, everytime I used to see a Clio V6 (Which wasn't very often at all), my neck snapped around, and I pulled in behind them just to savour the sight.

Exactly :) The reaction at Santapod and Trax this weekend? Mega! The rarity helps add to the pleasure of owning one and is why the members of the public react really well to them. You just dont see them every day.

Regarding the wet, well ...... try it and see ;) It will probably be the best fun you will ever have in wet conditions with any car .... just ask The Stig ;)

I must have missed your session when it was wet at Silverstone yesterday ;)

It was good to see you despite you being a cheeky f^&@*r!

Everyone understands the appeal of a Porsche but ultimately its a personal choice.

engines are not parts they a group of parts engines blowing up are rare but yes it happens a porker will be cheaper to live with than a vee and you know as well as me that anything to do with modification on the vee is a fortune porsche bits every were my mate has an old wide body turbo and his thoughts and every one hoes owned a panza will tell you the same easy to live with power for buck great however i would not buy a new one better car than the vee in every way but not my cup of tea to common for me

Sorry, don't take any offence Ray but I completly dissagree. If you went in to ANY engine builder, handed them a Porsche motor and said tune that, they would be rubbing there hands together for a long while. If I remember rightly, last time my best mate changed a clutch on one, it cost £1200 for the parts alone.
As for what it costs to tune our engines lets not open a can of worms but, that comes purely down to how much the given person wants to waste on glitsy parts that don't offer alot/if any gain over parts that can be bought or machined for a quarter the price else where. The clio 24v 3.0 V6 is nothing new, fancy or ahead of its time. It follows the same basic principles to run correctly as 99% of all other combustion engines, hence it should follow 99% of all basic tuning principles used on them.......Rant over.

I'm genuinly not taking any dig at you for what your saying by the way Ray. Thats just my opinion mate.

:approve: Well said mate.

As far as the original question goes. Personally, I know I'd get bored with the Porsche eventually. There's no sense of occasion. No sense of crazy Frenchness about it. And you can't take the covers off a Porsche to hear the engine and smell the petrol.

Alright there is a bucketload more power and the handling is no doubt much better (although this is down to the skill of the driver as much as the ability of the car) but the problem with power is you get used to it after a while. That's why F1 drivers hate road cars as they see them as ultimately compromised machines. The vee isn't about power (well not in these modern times anyway) as much as road presence, rarity, a sense of occasion and of course a friendly, enthusiastic small group of like-minded owners :)

Just my thoughts.

Oh and the Porsche would definitely be the more expensive ownership prospect. What was a 996 911 turbo new? £100K with some options? No way that'll be less expensive to maintain/run than a £27k Renault.

996 turbo is night and day faster, not too expensive to run( if you go to the right places...) but is a different kind of carto drive, they are easy to drive and anyone can go fast in the with no effort, aircooled911s are the way forward they are very similar to v6 in character, and the more effort the driver outs in the more you get out of the car. 996 non turbo, we workon these cars daily and see our share of engine issues, for that reasons wouldn't own one, 996 turbo uses an old air cooled engine modified to be water cooled, I would owna 996turbo, but I own a 3.0 aircooled911 and I do own a Clio v6 enough said?

Before my time, but an entertaining discussion nevertheless, and some of the responses are rather hilarious...........

Interesting to note that a majority of the contributors are no longer members of v6Clio.net................wonder what their thoughts are now when it comes to the Vee, and how it matches up to other cars?

As you know I've recently been searching for a clio v6 replacement

I'd agree that the 996 turbo is just too clinical and too dull

The only car has come close so far to the vee excitement for me is a ferrari f360

Which is a bit of a shock for me as I'm not really a flashy ferrari type person I prefer q / unusual cars like the vee

also was a big debate recently on HK forum about f360 vs boxster spider - when I said Porsches are boring they said I didn't know what a real drivers car is! Till I posted clarksons video which shut them up

Point is this all shows what a great drivers car and fun it really is in the current world of traction controls dcts electronics etc

Porsches are fabulous cars, but only certain models will provide the excitement as one gets from the likes of the Vee. The 996 Turbo is definitely not one of them, and nor are most of the post-993 road cars. However, earlier RS' and the GTx (RS) variants are on another planet.

Agreed - the guys in Hk were telling me I need to have a ride in their boxster spider to experience a real drivers car!

Guy whose coming to look at my cars owned 993s plus had a 964 turbo but sold it :(

Been toying with the idea of a 996 C4S (not a replacement for the Vee). They are such alot of car for 20k!
Would love a 964 or 993 but looks like they have appreciated out of reach.

Amanda prefers the E46 M3 but I'm working on it lol

Chris, I've had a Porsche 996 C4S for a few months now. You're right, you do get a lot of car for £20K, I'm looking now to upgrade to a 911T in a few months as I've enjoyed it so much. It's interesting that people are comparing vees to 911s in this thread which seems a bit weird to me as in my humble opinion they're like chalk and cheese to drive.

The Clio V6 however is still my favourite car however for all the reasons mentioned above.

Owned a Gorgeous 996 Turbo Porsche Exclusive Programme Car ( Cost £150k New ) with Just 8000 Miles on it for many Years along side my V6 ... The 911 has long since gone at a loss of over £40k with the non-admiring expressions of countless folk along the way , Still own the V6 which has all but doubled in Value and People Flock around it everywhere i go !
Hope this answers the Question !

Mate of mine just sold his silver 996 C4S, I had the privilege of driving it for about 100 miles on a breath taking road up to Mallaig on the West Coast of Scotland. I was very impressed with the 911 and I would never have dared drive my vee as fast round some of the corners!
It didn't have that "special" feel to it though like the vee does. I remember thinking that despite the Porsche being worth about £5k more than the vee (well it was back then anyway ;) ) I wouldn't have swapped my vee for it. Very capable car though, oh and it sounded amazing with an after market exhaust.
