Clio auto box problem

I have been searching for ages but can't find the info I need.

My little Clio has been parked up for a month because I got sick of getting drench every time I went round a corner..it even rained in my car when it hadn't rained for days lol..

I have only had it a few months and it's had a slight leak from the gearbox .it was working when I parked it up,,but now it will only go in reverse... My friends daughters son decided to put fluid in the gearbox that I had in car but not sure what fluid and if it was correct sort..need to grill the guy when I find him..as he didn't even ask me..

My question is what fluid should go in it...and is an auto always expensive to fix. The revs seem to stay high longer than normal before returning to idle..

Any help you can give would be really nice :-)

Auto boxes use 2 types of oil in them.ATF for the gearbox end of things and gear oil for the diff. Maybe the fella put the wrong oil in.can you tell what colour oil is thats leaking for the gearbox?

He told me he put it in the dipstick and after reading my manual it says to do that ,,

I will have to check what he put in it I think it was a litre bottle of transmission fluid had when I had my merc auto .. But on reading it needs 3 litres I think..

So I'm hoping I can put 3 litres in a it will work lol ,,,I know it's a big hope!

All I can say is whatever fluid he put in its all leaked out again over the month it's been stood.

So will have to fill it up , if I can't see where it's leaking from,,,,how many places can it be leaking from ?. I had read someone had a washer missing and that's why his Clio was leaking. But

Found out the guy is a qualified mechanic and not just a grease monkey lol ,,but I'm still concerned he might not have the knowledge of an auto box as don't mechanics specialise in them.

He said if it's my selnoid then it would be cheaper to put a new box in. But I don't accept that lol .

And the oil thing confuses me..oil I think engine oil..but then people are saying gearbox oil is the same as transmission fluid,,,so why don't they call it fluid lol..

Thanks for posting to help me devo :-)

Castrol do one called ATF (automatic transmission fluid) which makes things nice and simple

If it was oil in the diff end that was leaking,it wouldn't have any effect on the how the gears work. Must be ATF that's leaking. it might be a dodgy drain plug or a cracked casing.

Hiya guys

My disability has been really bad recently so only just sorting it out today. I'm going to buy a cpl of litres of fluid and see if she goes so cross all your toes for me hehe .

I have found a lovely renault scenic I want to buy another auto lol so even if my Clio drives I'm selling it to buy the bigger newer renault lol getting further away from retro buy not by choice cos for me my old 19 cab is up there in my best cars along side my mk 2 golf gti. For me both sexy cars hehe .

Will update you later hopefully with good news :-)

Filled it up with fluid still not moving,,only reverse

My friend searched internet and is suggesting the gear linkage cable may have stretched and need replacing.

Got guy popping round soon to have a look :-(

My car was jacked up and the wheel went forward but when put back down he hardly moved

My friend said he thinks it the torque converter ..

Headaches ! Lol
