Clio Clio 182 Trophy New Daily/Project...

Bit of a delayed thread this one as I bought the Trophy in December 2014. Ive have fancied one of these for years after having a 172 Cup for 5 1/2 years and a 172 Full Fat for 2 years. Initially found this one on ebay 10 days before Christmas, sent a few texts asking the usual questions and then the listing disappeared. I then got a message saying that someone put a £250 deposit down and then couldnt have it so it was offered to me £3450 to pick up from Brighton by the end of the weekend just before Christmas.

Anyways seemed a good propostion as it had 2 owners, 65,000 miles on the clock nearly full service history and all old MOT's, front Sach's refurbished in 2012, cambelt/dephaser & aux belt done in 2013 by DTM (the guy I bought it from paid £5995 for it in October 2013 from DTM Newcastle) New MOT with all brakes replaced & recent service, mint interior, standard apart from Milltek cat back exhaust and ITG panel filter in oe airbox. Got it for £3400 in the end and drove it home from Brighton to Norwich to add to the collection of 3 Renault's already lolTrophy.webp DSCF0686.webp DSCF0695.webp DSCF0693.webp DSCF0698.webp

Found abit of time to start checking the Trophy over, noticed the front part of the wheel arch liners were missing N/S/F and damaged O/S/F so sourced some good second hand ones to fit for now, also replacement locking wheel bolts as I only had 3 and N/S/F didnt have one.

Also bought some new mats, arch liner plug fixings and Ipod/phone lead for the oe stereo and rear wiper.

If you look at the 3rd picture in there's my black 172 fullfat previous daily next to the raider, just needed the phase 1 11 turbo in the same picture as for 4 months I owned 4 Renaults, whoops!

ohhhhh, I love these 182 Trophy's..favourite ever showroom Renault built for track... I do hope you get it out on a track day....
I have had the pleasure of driving 2 on track and to be honest, I had not found the limit of it's abilities after a full morning hooning around Donington, and for those who know me , I do try very hard :-) ....
Enjoy it and hold on to it if you can, these are rising in popularity every day .... sadly due to the limited numbers left that are not written off....

It is something else when you compare it to a full fat cup edition..... not even close...ENJOY...
it's one of the few cars on my list to own before I hang up my boots

Time to update the thread again.

I started driving the Trophy as my daily 1st April 2015, the spare key wasnt working so I booked it into my local Renault dealer just down the road from work where a good friend of mine worked to get it repaired and re-coded. This was sorted and they advised rear exhaust mounts were toast and a rear brake pipe was corroded so ordered and fitted shortly afterwards along with a brake fluid change.

May 2015 I replaced the tailgate struts as I was fed up with it dropping on my head everytime I went in the boot. These are crazy money from Renault however sourced some Magnetti Morelli ones from ebay that are a perfect fit.

July 2015 I had noticed a rumbling noise getting louder and louder, appeared to be coming from the passenger side, also steering didnt feel quite as sharp as it did before. After jacking it noticed that both passenger side front and rear wheel bearings were on the way out and getting noisy, also play in both track rod ends. Sourced genuine wheel bearings from Renault and Lemforder track rod ends from Euro Car Parts got these fitted on and it made quite an improvement.

August 2015 I sourced some new genuine Sachs rear shocks to go on when the originals have had it, added to the cheeky original Turini spare wheel (with shady tyre) I bought months earlier and spare set of low mileage oe Trophy springs to complete the suspension spares dept.

September 2015 replaced the coolant temperature sensor as the temperature gauge was irratic and would drop from upto temperature to halfway to cold. Also changed the coolant for some type D for good measure, flew through the MOT with no advisories on the 1st of October so all good for another 12 months. :-)

Around 30-45 mins per headlight they will be fine, lots of that blue masking tape stuff around the headlight you are doing particularly at the bottom and sides. They do go pretty really 'misty' after the first stage and you will think WTF have I done! however all good in the end, the 3M kit is very good with with C4 to seal them afterwards you cant go wrong fella. ;-)

Update time again...

All going well with the Trophy until the Monday morning when I left for work at 7.15 am and after driving for 1 mile the red oil pressure light came on with the stop light. I pulled over, re-started and after a minute it came back on, with with I limped it the 1 mile home mostly coasting down the hill. When re-starting it did not appear to come back on, revved a little and still no oil pressure light on, undid oil filler cap and could see oil splashing off the cams. Anyway, left it at home and got to work, that night I very gingerly drove it to my work at a maximum of 2500 rpm and left it there, as I was away with work for a couple of days and my local Renault dealer was 1/4 mile down the road from work I booked it in there and dropped it off with them. I did think of replacing oil pressure switch incase that was faulty, however was mindful of the engine getting wrecked if I continued to drive it if there was an oil pressure fault with only 71,000 miles on the clock.

Time for Renault diagnostics results...

Oil pressure switch was fine and working as it should, oil pressure tests carried out, 1 bar @ idle and 3.8 bar @ 3000 rpm (minimum pressure is 1 bar @ idle and 3 bar @ 3000 rpm). They did however find that oil pressure does fluctuate without change in engine speed so sump removal was recommended to investigate further. Once sump was off they found parts of sealer from main bearing cap in oil pick up strainer, which was causing the oil pressure fluctuation and also slight wear in oil pump once stripped.

New oil pump fitted (R15 01 054 28R)
Interim service done
New clutch kit fitted (R77 01 476 557)
New gearbox oil (R77 11 433 525)
New O/S output shaft seal (R77 03 087 148)

Got the clutch done as subframe was already dropped for sump removal and did need a clutch. All done at 71079 miles.
