Clear engine cover prob

Just wondering if anyones had any probs with the clear engine covers :( maybe my fault [smilie=doubt.gif] but i put the top cover over it a while ago, i had to call over to my local paint shop (not V6 related) and a lot of the lads were crawling around the car, they asked for a look at the engine, Guess what, the poly cover had melted and was well distorted with the heat of the engine. am i on my own with this happening? i would guess at no more then 100 mls of use :(
Not moaning about it, but thought it worth a mention.

whats the point of a clear engine cover you cant leave on while driving i thought that was the whole point of them

Don't recall reading how much heat this perspex can withstand or what temperature it is likely to deal with.

Perhaps the top cover being over it has prevented any normally circlulating air over the engine area from cooling at least the top of the perspex.

Quite a few people have turned up to meetings with perspex cover on show, and no sign of melting.

:s Looks like ime on my own then :s i reckon that even with the top cover off it must be marginal, shame really because they do look good fitted. maybe just worth bearing in mind though for those that have them fitted.

Mines still in good condition but has melted slightly around the bolt holes but probably due to the metal fasteners getting hot.

Could you not use toughened glass instead as it wont melt and it does not scratch as easily as perspex?

The glass would ass extra and unwanted weight compared with polycarb. There maybe issues with the contours as the glass would needed to be moulded slightly as, the clear viewing panel is not completely flat i believe? Someone could correct me however?

I thought the weight of a small panel would not make a great deal of difference given how heavy the car is anyway? I was not aware that it was moulded so will look into it with a glazier I know to see if it is an option?

Cheers Looch.

PTFE washers/grommets might cure?

I expect the glass would need to be sort of Pyrex or similar. I wonder what the cost would be to cut and mould glass plus drill all the holes?

FTR Peter255 & Bill Patchall don't go over 30 mph

Regards, Steve.

Seriously thats not true. Its done a 3hr session stuck in traffic on a roasting day recently and some long fast runs.

I'd guess its the fitting TBH. Or the engine bay fans aren't working...

How many of you with no problems run with the top cover on top of the perspex lid?

I do. Its modded with a thick perspex window in it to match the lower cover, but i don't see that making any difference from a std top cover. Its always fitted and will insulate similarly to the std cover.

I'd guess the metled one was fitted a little different and was touching the engine, and / or the fans are not working...

Cheers
Peter :D

Mine has done a couple of track days and is still in one piece although the corners are a little warped out of shape. Would LOVE a glass one.....

design flaw maybe ? ,there are different plastics for different applications might be worth looking at them ?

Engine fans are working :) just thinking out of the 100 mls i covered, the 1st 50 mls or so was done without the top cover, all was OK when the top lid went on, so its deffo hapened only with the top lid in place. suppose its like putting the cover into a oven :)
