Changing gearbox circlip

G

Guest

Any tips for this job?

The circlip hasn't 'popped' out as such, the driveshaft has ripped one half of it out the box, but it's still in there and the car still drives.

See here for pics of the damage: http://www.clio16valver.co.uk/forum/vie ... 7&start=15

I'm going to change it for a new circlip. If i do take the old clip out, will i have problems with the new clip 'popping' again, or should it be ok?

Might sound a dumb question, but how do you change it? How does a circlip actually work?

Thanks.

you squeeze the ends together it gets smaller and you can then remove it from the grooves with the gearbox type internal circlip.

external circlips work the opposite way around.

It's this clip i'm trying to replace:

I understand you put something in the two grooves to 'pinch' it together, and then the reverse of that to replace.

Is there anything else to it? I've got a new circlip coming from Renault, it also comes with a washer apparently. What's the washer for?

Is there a specific way the clip goes in? I don't want it popping out again.

How does that little clip transfer the drive from the box to the wheels?

yes as simple as that...usually using a set of circlip pliers

not really can go in anyway any where iirc.
How does that little clip transfer the drive from the box to the wheels? it holds the gears in mesh that all without they lose drive..

If the circlip can go in any way around, whats the groove/gap for in the pic above?

to help you remove it... no idea mate... :?

but as it just sits in a groove and the ends don't interfere with anything then its will be fine...

circlip

if the circlip popped out once... it will keep popping out. the part in which the driveshaft does in has some teeth on the other side... those tend to wear out and it is pushing against the circlip and washer.

the washer goes in first and afterwards you fit in the circlip.
if you want it to never get out again, you take the gearbox apart and do something like this.....img2945mh6.webp

it will never pop out again...

^^^^^^^^^^

didnt pop out though was caused by a shaft failure.. :D

are you sure nothing fell into the GB? i mean the little parts from the driveshaft... if yes you must take the GB apart...

Yes, all the ball bearings from one of the bearings fell in.

If yes you must take the GB apart...

Why? It still drives fine. I drained the oil and removed any metal from the oil before i put it back in. Unless it causes a problem it will be fine.

Happened with my current gearbox and it's been fine!

That's good enough for me. Only needs to last another month!

Can't imagine the heavy metal jumping up, i'll just stick a magnet to the bottom of the box to near the drain plug to collect all the crap, lol.

i don't mean the little cylindrical bearings... those don't do anything to the gearbox... i mean the big metal ring that holds them there... a friend of mine had this problem, the big ring fell inside... and we took the GB apart

Yeah lucky for me the 'big ring' fell out when i removed the driveshaft.

Phew!!
