Changing Coils

Matt

New Member
Ordered some new coils so just need to fit them. Ones nearer the back are dead easy but can't get to the ones near the front (boot lid end).

Is it easy to get the front coils out? How many bolts is it to remove the top inlet in order to see them? I can see two bolts at the back and then some small ones holding it on to the carb inlet. Are these the only ones?

Thanks,

Matt.

I think there is either 5 or 7 bolts through the plenum, this should be enough to get it out of the way to fit the new ones..

you'll need to loosen the two slide type bolts which are horizontal nearest you, and then the 5 or so in the top of the actual plenum..

hope this helps..i did it regularly on my mk1..but cant really remember the exact details

Cheers Colin. I'll take some pics and post them up in case others want to see how it's taken off. Got 6 Valeo coils at £22 each (trade). None on mine have gone but thought it's best to be safe and can't be arsed being stranded somewhere.

God this cars turning out to be expensive!

excellent matt...can you please say where you got the coils for that price?

or is it a case of knowing the right guy?

Valeo? this is now the third manufacturer of these coils to be mentioned. Which are the least reliable then? and who makes the square top Trophy coils?
So far we have Sagem, Bosch and now Valeo.

A company in Lancaster called EK Brakes. The price I paid is trade but I don't think they are much more at normal price.

Took me 30 mins to change all6 coils and 6 spark plugs! Not bad going for a first timer!

1. Removed all 7 bolts from around the plenum (3 underneath the plastic wire trail) 2 on either side of the plenum and two at the back nearest to the boot)

2. Slackended off the inlet clip and pulled off the end of the plenum.

3. Bit tricky but there are two bolts at the bottom of the plenum which allow it to either rotate upwards or be removed. I managed to get a long ratchet in there and slackened them off to allow the plenum to be removed and rotated backwards (unclipping the injection connector underneath). This should then expose the 3 coils nearest the back of the car.

4. Remove bolts holding each coil in place. Pull off the coil to detatch from spark plug and remove each plug.

5. Insert new plugs one at a time and push new coils on.

6.Repeat for coils near the front of the car.

7. Start engine to make sure they work.

It was dead easy and I've noticed better response from the new plugs.

Hope this helps,

Matt.
