Changing cambelt

Hi Guys,

What is the recommended time to getting your cambelt change?

My car was registered November 2003 and has done 14500miles (no track use).

When should I get it done?

Also how much is it do ge the job done? Renault, elsewhere?

72,000 miles or 5 years I believe?

My car has done 36,000 miles and is 5 years old in September and I'm getting mine done end of this month.

Figure will most likely only ever have to do this once.

I assume that waiting until the 5 year mark is fine? i.e., 5 years isn't the point where everything can possibly go wrong and nacker your engine?
 
5 years is the period you have to save up for the expense :(

I'm sure some people have taken theres off after 5 years and they've hardly look warn, it's recommended and whether I change now as I reach 5 years or at 50,000 miles i'm still most likely only ever going to have 1 cambelt change during my ownership as come 2012 I really can't see myself having the car and I can see myself going on to take the car past 100,000 miles after this change to warrent another on the 72,000 miles basis
 
Mine was done by Matt (previous owner of this parish) at about 20k heh cos it was 5 years old. I have the original bits here which he kept and literally, you'd be VERY hard pressed to tell them from brand new items. The bill I have here is for £400 labour plus about £250 for the parts at a independant garage. I'm told it's around a grand at Renault tho...

Right that's good to know. Thanks for that information. I'm certainly going to shop around and get it done at an independant garage.

A grand is a s**t tonne of money to pay for a compulsory service!!

But you are not driving round in a standard Clio ;-) It's an engine out job too ... Though of course you do get 12,000 mile service intervals which makes the Vee pretty good on interim service costs.

There are lots of posts about cam-belt changes, Clarkie runs an independant garage and does it cheaper than a grand and is highly regarded as is Scott at SG motorsport.

Its not so much the wear on them but it is the fact that it is mainly rubber and is perishable. They recommend 5 years as it is under tension all the time. Best to spend the money and get it done as if it goes snap you will be in a world of pain (that’s when the bank manager has finished with you for the cost of repair)

Also some places take the engine out but some leave it in I guess down to the skill of the guy doing it, and don’t forget the water pump while you are at it !!

Did they take the engine out and do the pulleys and water pump for that price?

Sounds too cheap.

The engine has to come out to do these. A few owners on here have had a water pump problems so be warned. Get it changed when the engines out. The belt can be changed in the car if thats all your having done but i woudnt recommend just that.

Scott @ SG motorsport did mine and a grand job he did too. The top bloke to see with a vee.

Mine was registered in November 2003 as well, so will need doing November 2008. I think, form reading from this thread and also previously, i'll go to Clarkie or Scott - the Renault guys seem to charge way more and are not to be trusted. Would rather use these guys as they're 'Vee Specialists' and have v.high recomendations from everyone on here.
 
you can get the cambelt done for free if you get renault to damage 3 of your precious rims and fail to match the colour on their refurb!

free refurbed wheels + cambelt change! ;)
