I read a few places have managed to change the cambelt with the engine in. How is this done and why doesn't most places do thisif so?

from what i understand its just loads easier to takee the engine out rather than fiddling about with it still in car.

dont think you can replace the water pump with the engine in and this is advisable to do, martin

Mine had the waterpump replaced as well, and Matt told me the garage did it with the engine still in.

Dan

My car has done 25k tho so does the pump really need doing?

Although i'd expect it to be more faffing, surely it would still be far less labour intensive for not spending hours taking the engine out?

Renault recommend that at 5 years or 72k belt and pump changed.

it's up to you if you want to take a chance.

So renault recommend the pump should always be changed with the cambelt, or is it just alot of people think it's a good idea to change while the engine is out?

It's a false economy not to change it at the same time.
You're asking it to go 10 years?...some have failed pre 5 years.

yeah, you put it that way it makes more sense, although alot of cars will go that long without a pump change easily.

my water pump just went on 25k and guy replaced the cambelt too, did all this with the engine in, he said it is a nightmare car to work on though...

Where was that and how much dorras?

there is no way you can do the job properly without at least dropping the engine down a long way.
i done it both ways and the engine out is the best way to do it the correct way.
