Bumpy ride and popping/backfiring!

Hi all,

This morning was quite a cold morning - I mention this in case it has any relevance.

After a minute or so the car starts running like a sack of crap - stuttering and jumping and then resumed to a nice smooth ride.

I've noticed this on some days before in the cold but today was worse. When going over around 3k revs the car would again start jumping and stuttering and this time I could hear popping or back firing from the rear of the car.

I've done some reading and I know coil's are a common fault but I don't seem to be matching the exact symptoms, but I'm guessing this is still a possibility? Could anyone shed some light?

Thanks,
Ricky

Edit: There are no lights on the dash to show any problems and, I hope this doesn't have any relevance, it went through and passed it's MOT only 2 days ago - I'm hoping they've not tweaked anything, I doubt that though...

Could be coils but my money would be on fuel filter or pump. Only reason I say that was because mine was doing the exact same thing. There was no signs of it running on five but the power backed right off after 3-4krpm until it would rev no more. I thought due to lack of fuel being injected with the throttle wide open. After letting off the throttle slightly the revs could then raise slightly more. Maybe doing so because the fuel mixture was a little better with out the tb wide open.Letting off the throttle completly would get huge back fires.

First thing is first. Definatly check the coils this will take a while as you need to check all six individually by using a fresh one. If they are all ok check the fueling.

Hi,

It's time I posted an update on this. The day I posted this, I drove back from work and the car was absolutely fine. I've since used the car several times and still it is showing no signs of trouble, I'm not certain the problem is gone, but based on the last week I'd say whatever the issue was it was a one off (I hope that doesn't sound stupid or naive).
