Bumper Stone Chip Theory

This may sound controversial but ...

A few of us on the French trip noticed varying degrees of stone chips and I, coupled with some of my own observations, came up with the following theory - which seems to make sense but am not researched enough to explain why ...

It would seem that OEM paint is much more able to withstand stone chips. Bumpers or aread which have been painted seem to be more prone to stone chips. My car has not had its bumper re-sprayed (apart from a small section I did myself) and it is notable that this re-sprayed area has picked up significantly more stone chips. This also seemed to occur more on other cars which had re-sprayed front bumpers although Stevos car seemed to fair up pretty well.

Here is a picture of my front bumper with an area of denser stone chips the same size as an area which was re-painted ...

I point I had noted too Martin.. :approve:

Not got around to washing mine yet to comment on the state of mine. Hopefully later tonight :)

I had my bumper resprayed quite some time ago, took it back to them just a few days later as I noticed I was suddenly getting loads of chips. He said they had used a standard lacquer, but needed to use something different, It was much better at resisting chips after that.

Where as I'd always believed it should be the other way round. I was told that the water based paint and lacquer that Renault necessarily had to use to meet regulations wasn't particularly strong, but when respraying they'd be able to use stronger solvent based products. All I know is that at 36k miles without a respray my front is a joke with it looking totally white in places!

My car and Bretts were peppered after a couple of hundred miles, both with fresh paint.

Stevos faired up better but I think he got a few more coats of laquer!

Due to having venture shield fitted, I would like to know the outcome Shaun :approve:

Ventureshield is without a shadow of a doubt the solution :approve: After having my bumper sprayed I noticed it was picking up chips again  before it got too bad I had in for the Ventureshield treatment and it's still looking pretty good 8) Well worth the money in my opinion :approve:

Don't forget though Phill you don't drive fast enough for the chips to cause any damage to your bumper so this may be helping reduce the numbers

In all seriousness though I have also seen the venture shield stuff on e-bay for anyone wanting to have a go DIY :approve: Alternatively Phill what about some of those rubber tiles stuck on them auld boats you lot make up in Barrow ;)

Blimey DIY the stuff [smilie=icon_eek.gif] I can't really see that being a viable option tbh as they cut the shape out using a template on a machine, it's worth getting it professionally done and I was very pleased with the result, and before anyone asks NO I'm NOT on comission

The rubber tiles would work but I guess their weight could prove to be an issue
;)

Guess it depends on how comfortable people are really phill ... a template would be quite simple to make and then from there I guess its how steady your hand is etc ... the stuff I have seen goes on with the help of water and many people might just do the front bumper ...

Food for thought as the film isn't too expensive for a test fit ... but yes paying for it professionally fitted is another safe option ...

go to your nearest sign maker ask for 3m scotch film cut your own templates and wang it on saves you shit loads

Mine seems to pick up loads more chips since i started getting it sprayed regularly ( 3 times in 2 years)
