Brake stuck on

Just been out in the V6 and when I reversed off our gravel drive the passenger side front wheel was dragging, then there was a clonk as is if the brake was seized on but had just released itself. Any ideas what the problem is and what the cure might be?

Congratulations on your new purchase Steve.!

Had the car been left,.. over night for example, before you went to move it off the drive? If so, it's not an entirely unusual problem with vee's. Mine does it when left in the garage if it get put away wet, after cleaning it too if I don't take it around the block before putting it away.

I'm not aware of any cure, but i'm sure some folk may have suggestions.. lol
 
Steven, only usually a problem on the rears when the car has been left standing for a while. not heard of this on the fronts before. Sure it wasnt just a stone (from the gravel drive) wedged between caliper and pad maybe. See how it goes. Good old calipers on the front not normally any issues with them at all.
 
Cleaned it yesterday, then it chucked it down with rain whilst out in it, then left on drive overnight in the rain, therefore brakes were obviously v v wet! I'm just concerned that when it clonks to un stick itself it maybe causing damage to something?

Been out in the rain again, car sat on drive for about 2 hours and the brake had stuck again. Have now put in garage. Probably won't be using it tomorrow so lets see what happens on Monday.....

Damp brakes bonding on is a common thing on the Vee. Whenever I put mine away after a wet drive or washing it it happens, and they come off with a big clonk if I don't drive it again within a day.

Be careful because the longer you leave it the harder it gets to unstick the brakes.
If I have washed the vee I always make sure the brakes get unstuck within 24hrs, then it will sit there quite happy for days/weeks.
 
It's a common snag, that owners "adapt" to.
I simply don't "wet wash" the wheels if it's going in the garage... or else go for a quick blast beforehand to dry them. :approve:
 
Sun is shining here in Essex so couldn't resist taking it out for a spin. brake was stuck on again but freed itself immediately. Now back in the garage dry and warm! :)
 
Just bumping this, had exactly this problem just now.

Front passenger side was dragging along the floor for about 5 feet out the garage.
Forward and backwards would not get rid of it, for some reason being on full lock to the right with a few revs and it gave me the big "clunk" sound as it released.

I suppose the lesson here is move your Vee once a week, not touched mine since December and with the heavy rain about, there's a lot of damp in the air.
 
I had a similar problem on the front calipers on my vee a few years back,
The problem was the wear plates on the caliper at the top and bottom of each pad. unfortunately these wear plates are prone to oxidisation between the caliper and the wear plate . ( behind the plate) . This causes the pads to become tight in the caliper which then causes the pads to sick against the disc when braking (rather than retracting to the open position as they should after braking). If the car is left for a period of time, the pads will corrode to the disc ( especially if the discs have been soaked whilst washing).
Below is a picture of the wear plates and fixing screw. ( E shaped square stainless steel plates in the centre of picture).

After changing the wear plates, the pads slipped into the caliper with ease during reassembly with No binding or locking since.

hmm interesting cheers for the pic i see now.
To someone who leaves his car stood for a while, washes it then garages it after its dried....how do you stop it?
The only thing I can think of is a) don't wash it unless its going out to play or b) use the car more often.
 
I ride backwards and forwards with a little brake pressure. Just to try and get as much out as possible before parking it up also once in the garage I use an air compressor and blow any remaining water out seems to help.
 
Check your sliders are free Gents, if not, clean and grease.

Sticking brakes from being sat in the wet is not so much a problem as long as the brake doesnt drag after its freed, and as long as no residual pad material sticks to the disc. This can cause vibration and uneven wear.

When it unsticks, roll the car forward half a wheel turn and you'll probably see the outline of the pad on the disc where it was stuck. Go for a drive, do a bit of braking and it'll likely have worn away quickly much like surface rust does.
