Brake noise after being parked up.

Morning all,

If i park up for a short period of time, overnight at the least when I drive I get a horrible scraping noise on the front discs/pads.

After some very heavy braking it will eventually go but it’s not exactly ideal.

What causes this, is it just rust on the discs or a lip (I doesn’t look like my discs have a big lip). I also have red stuff pads which could be contributing to it.

I’m fed up with driving down my street with everyone looking at my car with a wince due to the noise.

If all fails can someone point me in the direction of me standard discs and pads please.

I’m guessing it will be from condensation or rain as it will do it even on a dry night.

It’s so frustrating as the noise is terrible and can last for days.

Mine became irrecoverable when left damp in an unheated / non-dehumidified garage one winter. It was an expensive mistake as only pricey OEM parts were available to replace.

They really need to be used daily or carefully hibernated during Sept-April.

I suppose that’s where I am with mine then. I must have got to that point after it being garaged for the last 4 winters then not used enough when it’s out.

The hunt for new fronts starts now :(

HI there. Yes it will just be a film of light rust on the discs, the face of the pads will also have picked up the film of rust from that area of the disc which compounds the problem. The V6 brake discs are so big that if you just drive down the road & use the brakes lightly only a few times (especially if you brake lightly because you don't like the sound) it will not be enough to remove the rust film from the discs & the pads. When you drive it next like that just do 3 or 4 moderate/hard applications of the brakes from 40mph (CHECK BEHIND YOU FIRST ! ) That should be enough to remove most of the surface rust. Leaving the car outside in the rain or damp does make the discs rust quickly as they have a high iron content. If the car is laid up outside for a long time & the surface rust is a lot you really need to jack the car up, remove the wheels & rub the discs on both sides back to good metal (calipers off on the rear) with some abrasive emery cloth to remove most of the rust. If you don't the rust will just be bedded into the cast iron discs & will create a hard surface build up which is hard to remove & makes for poor braking efficiency. If the rust is really bad then i recommend you having the discs removed & re skimmed in a lathe which will give you a nice new surface to bed in with new brake pads. If the noise does not go away by driving the car & braking a lot then make sure you check for very low & worn brake pads or heavily lipped discs. Don't forget, brakes are super important on these cars so be careful if they are not feeling right or the noises persist !
