Brake dust and alloys

G

Guest

I spent an hour on each alloy the other day, scrubbing the fuck outta them, to try and get this brake dust out of the spokes...

Is there ANYTHING i can buy to get this fecking dust off, or is it there to cripple my alloys FOREVER?

Also, between now and FCS, i need a few good polishes, whats the best for a brooklands green clio?

:) Love y'all

Try any of these:

Brake cleaner,
Degreaser of some sort,
Very hot water,
Neat shampoo,

Then use an alloy wheel seal or wax to protect them!

Thanks duder! Will do when my car comes back from the fecking garage..again

Not sure to be honest, was gna go glossy black, but i want something so they'll show up...so i thought like, megane yellow, but thats too bright i dno - suggestions?

What colour is your car?

I would if you can get them sandblasted or chemicaly stripped then painted in a high temprature paint and lacqured.

But hammerite bbq paint is rather good!

The best thing you'll find for cleaning alloys is concrete cleaner... it's mildly acidic but is safe to put on metal, paint and is weak enough to be flushed down any domestic drain. I use it for cleaning carbon from valves but it really cuts thru brake dust and other crap your wheels pick up such as grease and tar. Can be had from places like B&Q for under £10

Brooklands green :) I thought yellow would be cool with like, the green and the silver-ish alloys but maybe i'm wrong...

Might have a browse at BnQ tomorow then if i can't find n e brake cleaner. :)

Engine cleaner works well for cleaning the wheels.. its strong enough to get the dirt out and still dont make any damage to them.. aslong as you dont let it sit there forever ;)

Be careful with what you use on them mate!

Dont use any sort of wheel cleaner in direct sunlight or if the wheels are hot it will stain them I know meguires hot wheels does this if you apply in these conditions and leave it on too long

Also dont leave any sort of cleaner on for too long as this can stain and damage the wheel finish.

I'd personally try a stong mixed cleaner prehaps hot wheels by meguires (you can get it in halfords for about £6) let it soak for a while on the worst bits but as stated above be careful! Also you can use clay (automotive claybars) on them to lift stubborn dust out but if you get an abrase heavy duty claybar (as in professional useage) take it easy as you might marr the finish :)

Good call Mike.

You may also find that some if the 'dust' are spots of tar which have bonded onto the wheels and then got baked on from the heat.

So try a good Tar & Glue remover Autoglym have one.

Give the affected areas a good soaking and let the product do the work of dissolving the tar.

Hope this helps

Chris
