BMW M4 Review

Was in John Clark's yesterday having the oil changed in mine (90 min fasttrack service) which is quite good...Although it did take a bit longer as they did the A/C at the same time.

Anyway, thought it would be good to have a shot in the M4 whilst I was there.

First impressions were (Body and wheel colour aside) it's a great looking car! - Aggressive yet quite subtle at the same time, you would have to really look for the ///M badges to really know what it is. Which for me, is ideal.

In the same fashion as my last wee review I've listed the pro's and con's.

+ Looks, well proportioned, looks fresh and modern.
+ Interior, ergonomically well laid out, it's an evolution on the E92, little things like the paddles are bigger and curved to fit your finger tips, steering wheel is chunky but better to hold than mine.
+ Toys, Pro Sav Nav is Std, as is mirrors, power seats, heated seats etc. The car I drove also had Heads up Display (HUD), which I found a little distracting at first but quite cool... The navigation of the iDrive system is a big step forward also. Easy to find things in the menus. Also you can see them on the HUD.
+ Seats are more supportive than the E92 and better looking too, more racey/bucket style. Loads of room in the back, as per mine. Boot narrower but still fine for a couple of sets of sticks!
+ Ride is supple, takes the bump well and the M1 and M2 buttons can be tailored to driver spec. One was full on and the other set midway to comfort. Will play a bit more next time I drive it, would prefer one with DSC off all together.
+ Performance is stunning. The mid range torque is brutal, it's over 100ft/lbs more than mine and you feel it. Didn't really push hand through the gears as the boy was sitting next to me. Every so often he went a bit quiet.
+ Brakes are an improvement on mine, great bite to the pedal, also look fitting for the car!!

- Throttle response isn't as sharp as the E92. The pick-up is a little lazy...perhaps the resettings the Power (Throttle Response) in the M mode would help...Although I didn't notice much of a difference between M1 and M2.
- Engine noise, whilst not as bad as the press makes out, is still poor compared to the old V8...C'est la vie. No turbo sounds as good as N/A imo.
- Colour options are crap. I only like one colour out the palate, 2 if you include Silverstone II which I have presently.
- Price...and my moan isn't against the price per se, it's more a case of is it worth £35k more than mine to change...I ain't so sure at this time.

I've requested a longer 24hr test-drive on the 16th. So I'll be able to drive it 'properly' without a sales guy beside me and see if it's truly for me. Bear in mind, I went into JC's for an Oil Change, not to buy the car. But it's more a case of whether I buy it now or wait a year or two and buy it then...I'm sure it's inevitable.

I'll update this thread in a few weeks.

Haven't seen an M4 yet but even a normal 4 series looks good. Only thing is I wouldnt have it in white, just not a fan of white cars

You will be buying Bratwurst and jackboots next to go with the lederhosen :approve:

Don't forget to have Weiswurst for breakfast and Schnitzel mit Sauerkraut for lunch when driving a BMW 8)

German saloons don't float my boat although that is a great looking car, but synthesised engine noises through the speakers is inexcusable.

Part 2!

I took a longer test drive of their M4 by myself without the Sales representative beside me. Personally, I don't believe you can get a feel for the car in 20mins nor with the sales rep beside you, hence asking for the longer term test.

This time I was able to really give the car a good test, the day was dry (rare) and I have to say I was seriously impressed. Again I've bulleted my points below. They do somewhat mirror my previous comments.

+ Performance is very impressive, the torque especially is quite addictive. The car pulls harder that the E92 and on a back to back test is a fair bit quicker through the gears.
+ Interior is a very nice place to be, decent driving position and seats are improved over E92.
+ DCT works as well as the E92. Not unsurprising
+ Heads-up display is handy, but a costly option.
+ Damping is fine, providing you leave it in comfort, otherwise it's too stiff (Scottish Roads)
+ Brakes, progressive, nice feel, didn't feel any better in terms of stopping power though...
+ Better day to day car than the E92...

- Lack of steering feel over the E92, constantly having to make mirror corrections...It's not bad, but the steering in the E92 is definitely better across all three settings
- Throttle response. Annoying, small delay was causing me grief, if you go one gear higher, you're at the tall end of the power curve and don't get the full benefit of the torque...
- Car feels bigger on the road...You certainly don't feel the weight saving over the E92.
-/+ Noise...I'm kind of middle ground here, through the tunnel it was awesome and you get a wee whistle too! I could get used to it.

Would I buy one? - Yes
Would I buy one now? - No (Maybe next year)

Pics. Handsome brute imo!

Thought that you would have traded yours in there and then having freewheeled your old E92 M3 down on to their forecourt, looks very shiny hmmmmmm.....!!!

Mines back working again Simon...kind of.

Wheels are a bit of both Kett. Black with a polished bit.

I've always been a fan of the aggressive look of M series cars but the front of this car has been hit with an ugly stick IMO.

The front spoiler looks " home made " by design with the pre- requisite being to fit the biggest duct openings you can manage without affecting the structural integrity.....there's just too much going on....
