Belt whine

swilding

New Member
I've had my vee for a few weeks now and I'm just getting on top of sorting a few minor niggles out. Has anyone else experienced a belt whining when the engine is warm? I'm assuming its the fan belt?

Thanks for any help,

Simon

is the sound coming from the drivers side pod?? thats where all the belts are. Is it due a cambelt mine squeek and mine belts are due a change

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll try and locate the noise a little better.

It certainly makes the noise with the AC off.

It is just one belt that does everything on the vee or are there a couple?

the pulley bearing is only spinning with the air con off, turn it on and its speed equalises and if it were the source of the noise it will then stop.

Dry auxilliary belts can cause a squeaking noise noticeable while idling - a light squirt of wd40 does the trick. if you want to validate this, spray a light mist of water on the belt and see if the noise stops, the water will evaporate so it's a good test if you are not comfortable spraying wd40 on them initially. This will isolate this is a potential cause.

or a bit of french chalk does the trick, dig out those old bicycle punture repair kits lying around, always a block of it there unused.

"french chalk"

That's the stuff!! I was racking my head trying to remember the name. I saw a mechanic use it on a Jag many moons ago. He had a stick of it and a nutmeg grater and puffed the chalk dust in the direction of the belt. At the time I thought it was just another one of those workshop pranks aimed at the tea boy.

I like these 'traditional' remedies :-) I can imagine modern technitians scratching their heads at the mention of chalk
