Battery Exploded

Hi,
I put my battery on charge this morning at 06:00hrs with the intention of leaving it on for 12 hours, at 17:10hrs it exploded sending black lumps of shrapnel over the wall and window on one side of the garage.
I suspect that a fault in the overload control in the battery charger caused this as the battery is only 18 months old but the charger is 22 years old.

No not near the car but the cat was asleep on the other end of the work bench so i had to bath him, he hates having a bath.
