Another question from me - fuel gauge

MarkR

I was out for a run last night as I'm trying to spend as much time with the car as I can atm to learn some of its traits :race: (I also had my first 'moment' accelerating off a slip road onto a dual carriageway, but that's a different story).

So, anyway, as I was pootling about when I noticed the fuel gauge needle was firmly in the red section. I flipped the trip computer and it was telling me that I still had 77 miles left before I had to fill up. The low petrol light on the dashboard was not illuminated but I chickened out and put in £55 worth of petrol @ £1.11 per litre.

My question is, is it safe to believe the trip computer and could I have easily got another 70 miles before filling up or do people generally just fill up when the needle is in the red?

-Mark.

Trip computer is usually accurate...mine can be near the red with still 90 odd miles left...

You should have approx 35-40 miles in tank when the light comes on :approve:

Knew I shouldn't have chickened out

Was just a little strange seeing the needle glued to the bottom of the gauge with 70 miles still left on the trip :)

Ahhh ... the Vee and it's laughably non-linear fuel gauge! The first half = the first 3/4. The second half = the last 1/4 eaten away in front of your eyes. Then it goes below the bottom to wind you up a bit! Then finally the light comes on ;).

Lol, gotta love it.

Although it still worries me when the needle is below the bottom line, with no light on! I've had my Vee almost 3 years now and i've still only ever let the light come on once or twice, mainly due to fear!

i have run mine down to when the trip goes --- miles left a fair few times, seems to still be good for another 20-30 miles. I find the trip to be pretty accurate whether you reset it regularly or never press it.

yip mate i used to run around for days with needle on empty but trip read 70 odd miles, light will come
on at 34 miles,i always used to chicken out and fill it as soon as light came on.

glad your enjoying it mate,im missin it like crazy,i want another NOW!!!

Certainly am Derek. Looks like the weathers going to hold this weekend so will finally be able to get her out on dry roads in daylight! :race:

Sadly its been a bit negative so far with people sitting right on my arse etc (but Dundee is not a great place anyway.... ;) )

yeah you will get that, usually a little prick sitting in a 1 litre corsa,i used to
just laugh at them knowing i had a 3 litre v6 lump behind me and leave them in the
distance.but to be fair never happened much, was all positive attention, plenty jaws
dropping and eye popping, questions at petrol stations.

let me know when your asked the question "where you buy your body kit mate"

you will either love the attention it gets or hate it, i bloody loved it,

I had attention yesteday lol! Scooby shot past then slowed down so i slowed down he then slowed further so i did likewise eventually ended up behind him in 50 mph zone. He slowed to 40 i slowed down too! He wanted me to race him .... f@&k off!! Funny how even a Vee gets a scooby drivers attention lol! About the fuel needle a few times its hit empty but the trip has read about 80. Managed to fill up in panic lol! Been as low as 65 miles without light on but I wont take the risk lol! But good to know you can go down to 30 odd miles but still would never risk it plus way too embarrasing if you run out of fuel lol!!
