2 things i'm concerned with

1 ) there is a high pitched ringing which is fairly quiet coming from what appears to be over my right shoulder as sitting in the car. It appears to come on when the fans for the vents come on but does come on and stay on when the fans are not on.

2) the gearbox is making a slight crunching sound when in very low revs in 1st and 2nd gear when coming to junctions and stuff. Also when changing gear and lifting the clutch it makes a bit of a crunch. It's definately there but not that noticeable. Once above 1.5k revs it doesn't happen and everything sounds as normal.

Went to GDI and they said try changing the gearbox oil.

Any help appreciated.

oh and it's a v6 mk1

Oh right, that's good to hear. It's only done 24k...

Is there anything I can do to reduce the noise? I would assume it's easier to hear noises as the engine is near enough in the cabin where as it would normally be under the bonnet and below the car.

Any ideas on the ringing sound?

it sounded like transmission slap at low rpm....

often some new box oil will help, as the boxes are not known for their strength.

plus with the exhaust running close to the box the oil will get very hot, especially if its been run on rolling roads.

hence why I suggested changing the oil

make sure you use the correct oil though

2.8 ltrs 75-80 Fully Synthetic... ELF sell one spcifically for that box.

Is a gearbox oil change easy for any old garage to do? And around how much does it cost?

Might be popping down to have that done soon Andy if you can squeeze me in for 30 mins.

I did it myself on Monday (mk2 tho).

Warm it up.
Undertray off.
Drain plug out.
Jack up.
Passenger side rear wheel off.
Plastic level and entry plug out.
Drain plug back in.
Add oil with squeezy container from wheel arch. Needs quite a long pipe.
When correct amount added refit level and entry plug and refit wheel and undertray.

Voila!

Did it feel any better afterward Pete?

Nah it still crunches!

I was looking for golden flecks in the oil and there was indeed lots of golden bits in the oil. That'll be the syncro!

So it's a common problem?

How are you looking to resolve it Pete?

Chris. My noise is only when I use the syncro to change up into a single gear (6th). It doesn't sound like you have the same trouble. I'm looking at a gearbox rebuild!

chris

yours does not feel like syncro as the changes are smooth.

its more like the diff slapping at low rpm when its not spinning fast...

would be good to see if the oil was holding some contaminates though...

it did drive ok though...

i do feel however that some of the problem is the fact you can hear everything as the engine is less insulated behind you...?

totally agree clarkie

its elf oil.... cant remember the numbers but gen stuff is whats needed.

Did you ever find the source of the high pitch ringing? I have the same noise coming from the same place, sounds kinda like little bottles chinking together, not noticed if its there with the fans on it seems to be there all the time, it's very quiet can barely hear it, and only with the window down I think, I hate funny noises in cars [smilie=evil.gif]
