1st gear problem

Hi guys!

So after driving the Vee for a few km's I've experienced that the 1st gear can sometimes be problomatic to get in to. It feels like something is blocking the gear lever to go into 1st when I'm at a traffic light. Sometimes I think that I have put it into 1st, cause it stays there, but then when I release the clutch the car dosen't move because it's not fully into 1st gear.

Is this a common issue, or should I have this checked out. My dealer gave me 3000 km warranty, so I'm trying to find as many faults as possible before I drive too far :-P

It is relatively common, but is not right, sounds like it needs some adjustment.

If it's ever stuck, put it in to reverse and then back into first and it should pop straight in.

My gearbox occasionally does that. What I do is to slide it down to 2nd gear from neutral then pushing straight up into 1st.

Me too. This also occasionally happens to me and I have always had the correct gearbox oil in my Vee.

Also if you pop in in neutral, let the clutch up, push it down again and then pop it in to first, that should work too.

Sounds too my like worn synchros? Mines has a variation of this, when coming back down from 2nd into 1st, it is quite hard to get into 1st. Sometimes with a bit of crunching as a result?
Anyone experienced this? I am wondering if a gearoil refresh can help this? What is the correct gearoil for a mk1 vee, and what is the correct quantity?
Have anyone tried using Redline oils on their Vee? I used it on a Lotus i had once (Renault NG1 gearbox). It really transformed the shift.

By all accounts it's an absolute pain to use correctly and therefore get an accurate level....

I had the car back from the dealer a couple of times, and the last times it has been good. I haven't actually driven it in the last month and a half so I don't remember how it is.
I'm still waiting to get the complete list of what they have done to the car as it is still at their workshop.

Getting to that dipstick is not easy. Better to use the dashboard readout.

There's also a good chance your gearshift cable has stretched or has not been set correctly after being replaced.
Mine broke, luckily in first gear, a few years back and it took quite a bit of fiddling to get right

Sorry, didn't think straight. Gearbox oil is something I have never checked. Haven't had the opporunity to check the underside of the car for leaks etc. Will do that once I get it out of the garage from it's winter sleep.
The dealer changed both the hydraulic pumps for the clutch since it was so hard to push down, and it had a problem going up again.
