19 1991 Hatch 1.4 EJ6 - 5th Gear popping out

Hi,
Old Retro-Renault member here. I have the above model and it has just started to jump out of 5th gear (I dunno, its only done 345,000 miles..). Symptoms are:-
Shift into 5th - fine
Drive at steady speed in 5th - fine
Lift off accelerator in 5th - fine
re-apply accelerator in 5th - pops into neutral
If you keep your hand on it you feel a very discernible 'thunk' trying to push it back into Neutral as you re-apply the accelerator. I'm guessing its a major gearbox issue, just wanted some confirmation and whether it can be fixed if you take out the box etc..? Any advice really...
Thanks
David

Hi,
Just an update on the above - gearbox has defo lost 5th gear completely now so the engine mount helped for a while but it must have been something in the box that was the problem - there's a distinct, irregular, 'tinny' rattle coming from the box on tick-over - but its driving in 4th ok. I'm chasing up that JB1 138 engine again, slightly different ratios but you seemed to think it would fit ok, its off an 8v 1.4 petrol so sounds like a match.
Wish me luck..!

Parents had something similar on a 1.7 21. Ended up just being the nut on that holds 5th gear in place had come loose.
Unfortunately they left it too long and it required a more comprehensive rebuild than just doing the nut back up again!

Appreciate the comment, stavers, hope I haven't left it too long if that is the problem - will get it jacked up on Saturday and have a good look, damn day-job keeps getting in the way. Otherwise its a gearbox swap-out, never done it before, description looks not too bad, but physically manhandling it out looks tough

Ok, I'm guessing this might not be too good. I took the tin cover off (thanks for tip about oil - caught about a litre in all) and as I removed it I heard the nut fall off, I then fished a few pieces of what looked like metal 'paper-clip' , there was also some ground up 'goldish'-coloured metal.
Not sure if this link will go through but there some photos here showing all the bits:-
(Gearbox )
The car is driving fine up to 4th gear, just no 5th obviously.
Is it worth just replacing the nut and seeing what happens? I'ts that metal 'paper-clip' I'm wondering about, its obviously something broken but not sure what.
Thanks

Obviously not good, but, if it were me, I would probably still put the nut back on and fill up with some new oil and see what happens. If it breaks you can always put on the spare box later.

I'll try and post a pic later - I have screwed the nut back on as tight as I can (till the shaft started to rotate) - it seems pretty tight anyway, and put everything back together, and 5th gear seems to work again! It stays in gear anyway , which is a huge improvement, but it does 'grind' a bit every time it goes into 5th - maybe that's the effect of the missing spring..?
