1957 Renault Dauphine (slammington rustbucket pic thread)

yay, front tyres sorted now. So it has fresh rubber shoes front and back. One of many things on the list obviously but means i could technically take it around the block. So tempted to do so but will get the brakes refreshed first.....

Wiper blades turned up but they don't directly fit. I will look at modifying them to suit. Gives me something to do and will save me searching and waiting again.

Wipers sorted. Ended up with some cheap generic blades then stripped them for the rubber. Does the job, well they look the part.

also managed to figure out where the gears actually are, dog leg 1st gear in this so ill need to remember that when in use. brakes some what worked on the drive, still need to replace the lines and fluid though.

I have spent some time remaking and cleaning up some electrical connections in the engine bay to aid starting and running and also looked into getting the oil pressure and water temperature working. Dash binical fitted correctly too. Not all complete yet but getting there slowly. I also popped down to forge motorsport to get some replacement water hoses. Fitted them fine and cures all my water leaks bar one, the water pump is now leaking. Order placed with a French company for a rebuild kit and alot of other odds and sods including new bump stops and headlights 1jWvZTA.webp

A few new bits turned up so I decided to have a little go. New headlights in yay. Non genuine so the housings were manipulated a little but you wouldn't notice as it's covered up by the chrome ring. One step closer now. And with the original yellow bulbs they look the part.lttt5QB.webp

Cracked on a little more today. Water pump removal and refurb. It's off and awaiting cleaning now. Hopefully I can assemble it and have it back on tomorrow for some water tight goodness. Removal wasn't too hard though it required me to remove the rocker cover and pipes. Easy job tbh. Even better and like the rest of the car all the nuts and bolts came out with ease. I did find one of the rocker shaft retaining bolts missing but found it in the head untouched so refitted it. Everything looks amazingly clean though. A little miffed as after going through my delivery I've found some bits missing so have fired off an email to try and find where they are.

Water pump reassembled. Gaskets were a little off but not by much so some sealant was thrown in for good measure. Hopefully it'll do the trick as the pump on this one isn't available that I can find. I also threw a new belt on at the same time. So tempted to fill it full of water and take it for a very brief test drive but giving it over night to cure the sealant.

so ran up the dauphine this eve, probably a good 10-15min, and all looks fine with regards to leaks so fingers crossed thats sorted. Need to get some fresh fuel in there though as its gone a funny shade of brown. I did have the filler neck disconnected so i think its got a little moisture in it. With it running i again moved it up and down the drive a little. Next up with be brake lines and fresh fluid. All being well i can test drive it in the next few weeks (y) still needs some work to the electrics too, brake lights don't work.... along with the indicators.

Managed to remove a shock ready for measuring up and a front brake hose. Popped over to the lads at hosetechnik/forge motorsport and had them knock me a up a set for the car. Orange in colour for no real reason. Got one fitted back up to test fitment and all seems good so far. I've not carried on as it was so bloody hot I couldn't work without sweat stinging my eyes.

I chucked some fresh fuel in and ran the car up for a fair amount of time now the water system is holding fluid, nothing there to tell me the temp but i wasnt too worried with the mechanical fan on there. The smokiness cleared and she seemed to run quite well, takes a few pumps of the throttle to get started but once up and running all seems good. Getting closer and closer to a test drive....

Not much more done tbh, being quite ill again recently but i wont bore you. Ive managed to replace another brake line and start bleeding the brakes on one side. I also needed to order a few little bits from france, the killer being the postage costing as much as the parts and now i need more..... Anyway i need to replace the brake lines on the opposite side of the car so that requires the car to be moved. What a perfect opportunity to give it its first very short and sweet test drive, off the drive and back on. I have a doubt that she isnt going to make retro rides next month now, there is a fair amount of work left to do that i currently cant deal with. Fingers crossed though.

New rubber seal for the cleaned brake res and nasty old fluid bleeding back through the lines.

and the first movement off the drive under its own steam

SOOOOOoooooooo, its been a little while. She didnt make it to retro rides gathering, tbh i had lost a bit of enthusiasm through being a bit ill and a few other things going on. She was in need of a few more bits to make her safe to drive there that i didnt have. Anyway today i received a new master cylinder and hand brake cables from franzose.de so hopefully i can pick up a little pace and get her running on the road (in a fashion) before we run out of dry weather. Not much has happened yet, i did properly re attach the front wishbones, and asses the master cylinder change but thats about it. So from what i can tell to give her her first run out in many many moons i need:-

fit one more brake hose
fit new master cylinder
bleed brakes again
make sure they stop all 4 wheels
wire in flasher relay for indicators
fit/make number plates

possibly fit up cowling to the radiator in the rear.
some working gauges would also be good as i have no idea on the engine temp or fuel level.

doesnt seem like alot but it will still take a while for me to work through.

So having convinced myself and the Mrs it would be just a case of a bit of fettling with the car I hired a trailer and went to pick it up

and got her home safely

I soon placed the bumpers and front panel in place and decided this will be the look I will be going for

ry%3D400.webp

Then got a load of mates round we sat in the car got curse word and decided on a plan, however the day after the plan went out of the window grin.webp

The car has major rot just about anywhere and everywhere so any ideas of going on the road quickly are long gone.

Not a problem as the car will never look pretty the plan is to polish what is left of the paint and weld up the rot and drive it but looking a the rot it might take me a good while to weld up I will keep you posted on here.
