So back in july august of 2013 i saw sparkie had his car up for sale. My mrs had just flown off to the states for a month so the day after she left i headed up to sparkies and collected the wee beast. She was a super clean car needing only a slight bit of tweaking to get her to drive nice. I decided to get out and go to some shows and take in the very good summer we were having. The only things i really changed were a newer set of front indicators and some pressed metal plates.
as winter approached the lure of more power and being able to start it every time without agro grew. I decided to take her off the road and start to do a full efi conversion. This is a pretty time consuming task as 1 it costs a fair bit and 2 there are no off the shelf efi parts or next to no after market parts available for the gordini/alpine turbo engine. The start was to try and get a flywheel modified to have a trigger pattern on that could be read by an aftermarket ecu. I had a chat with the guys down at Omex Technologies and they custom wrote an ecu/file that would work with a custom trigger pattern. I then had a spare flywheel modified for the job
I ended up with a 44-1 trigger pattern that should allow me to run the car.
Next up was the inlet side of things. I searched for a long time trying to find a suitable manifold to no avail and ended up starting to buy bits and bobs and cut flanges to start the fabrication of a custom inlet manifold.
and then i found a groupe 2 inlet manifold for sale in germany, a fair few poorly worded emails were sent and i managed to strike up a deal
this was then in a box and its way to me ![]()
I then started the conversion itself. The manifold was for a LHD car so i knew it was going to be tight but this was so tight i needed to start removing metal.
once the metal was removed i could then start mocking up the rest of the inlet, This included a pair of 40mm jenvey ITB’s and a Jenvey turbo plenum. The size of all this required yet more metal to be removed
and this is where i am at so far. The engine and box need to come out for a clean up. New fuel lines will be fitted while out and a new uprated cam will be fitted. Ive been told its more wild than the one that come in the turbo 2. This should help with the increase in power i would like. I should be getting back on this during january and by the start of feb i would like the car to be ready for plumbing and wiring ready for its first start. Fingers crossed
ive also just secured a second hand pace charge cooler kit from a gtt. it will need some mods to fit but was cheap and will do for now, it should actually be fine for the power i think the car will make
though it might not look like too much work, i have spent some time on the car this morning.
Just got to go get a ball joint spliter, that will then allow me to remove the steering rack. After that it should be undo the fuel lines and the engine mounts and it can lift out. Fingers crossed i can get to that point by the end of play today or before the rain starts falling again…
Ren5gord
I use a Renault alpine Gta turbo T3. which is a 50trim compressor and .36 exhaust just one step up on the compressor side to the RST
The RST spec is :- compressor wheel trim 45 exhaust housing ar .36.
The Alpine GTA turbo fits straight on you just need to run water cooling to it as well which is easy enough. The std gordini turbo is a 40trim and only any good for about 160bhp, RST should be ok for about 180 - 190bhp.
Mine has a cam and is injected. full boost by 3500- 3750rpm which is a bit late really running 21psi.
When you have the cam out make sure you check the cam bearings are ok especially at the timing chain end I have had a few problems with this.
nearly there
and out ![]()
now time to start removing bits and fitting the new stuff fingers crossed i can get this done in the next week. Ive also contact the welding and fabrication guy so hopefully he can come in and weld up the engine bay so i have clearance for the inlet manifold and plenum
Great project mate. Love it ![]()
cheers, its a bit further along now i just cba to take pics at the mo. should have a stack of goodies back from suppliers in a week so ill update some more then

my flywheel next to stock flywheel
Thats fantastic Adey! My first ever car was a Mark 1 GTL and I blame it for where I am today!
Great work mate!
cheers buddy, i had a 5 campus as a first car and i think that secured me into the renault fold. had a red le car 2 turbo back when i was 21 too so always had a soft spot for them.
The Mark 1 I had was 5 speed 1ltr….A155 TMA was the reg. Great memories. I have promised myself a mark 1 of any model these next couple of years. I’ll be on the look out!
So I have received 2 new engine mounts from meca parts as one of the engine mounts had separated completely, to compliment these I decided to bodge up and stiffen the gearbox mounts. I’ve done this to a few cars and it’s worked well. So out with the tiger seal and plenty of it put in the gaps
Who are you kidding, they’re MADE of tiger seal lol ![]()
tiger seat to support and reinforce the standard rubbers. works a treat i tell ya.
Great work ![]()
properly stuck now though, i need to get the chain off to remove the cam? ill start a thread in technical to answer it, my haynes doesnt actually say how to do it, grrrrr
