Sort of new....need some help with compression test on 16v?

Hey all - I’m a new member on here; but am fairly experienced with car forums in general…

My girlfriend owns a 1992 1.8 16v clio, and is having some major problems with it. I own a BMW and have found the beemer forum I use so helpful with advice and info - so thought I’d try here after trawling for 16v forums

To cut a long story short her cam belt went after numerous problems; bending a few valves etc in the process. So I just went ahead and sourced a replacement engine; which had recently had the head work done too.

I’ve had my mechanic replace all seals, gaskets, belts, plugs, oil, filters etc etc before putting it in. All has gone in fine and the engine starts up and runs no problem - however when you drive it there’s no power when you floor to open secondary injectors (sorry for the crap explanation - I’m not too savvy with these cars)

We’ve doubled checked everything; including trying both sets of injectors.

What i’d like to know is the following:

1: Can you do a diagnostics check on a car this old?

2: What the correct compression should be showing for each cylinder?

3: Is it possible I’ll need to have the ECU re-flashed; to solve the rough running issues - as it seems like a fuelling problem?

Apologies for such a long winded first post; I’m just really at the end of my tether with this car and am so close to scrapping it - which I really don’t want to do!

Thank you in advance for your help; I really look forward to your responses.

hello and welcome mate.

yes there is a fault code checker called an RX25 but having never used one not sure how much info they can give on an old model…

compression should be about 160/180 psi each cylinder.can vary and still run fine any lower though and there is issue.

it is but just by disconnecting the battery over night. doesn,t do loads usually though.

did you have two throttle bodies or just the same item. could be the tps on the throttle body needs resetting.

I have two sets of TB’s due to having two engines; I’ll advise him of this to see if this helps…

Just spoke to him; apparently has already tried both TB’s and fiddled with both a fair bit to no avail!

Basically it’s lacking power where you give it lots of throttle; it’s hard to explain but it’s where the engine note gets deeper like it’s opening up to suck more air in - again sorry for the crap explanation

they can be a bit temperamental but could try the tdc sensor on the clutch/gearbox too as this needs to be right.

apart from that where about in the country are you mate
