Quadra pros and cons? over 2wd

I owned a 21T phase 1,in 08-09,I have never driven a Quadra, admired a couple at close quarters. If I remember correctly they are marginally slower to 60?,better in bad weather,ie snow.I had to drive mine to work on the yorkshire moors during winter 08,and it wasn’t bad in the snow, for a 2wd,apart from ABS cutting in.Obviously they are rare as an honest politician now.One on EBAY at over 4k,very nice, overpriced, and I wouldn’t have it with cloth interior anyway.
Is the 4wd system reliable, and any inherent problems?.Just interested as don’t know a lot about them compared to 2wd.

Thanks Jim

Well. We could debate this all day.

Summarily, a 2wd is more fun every day with the torquey punch and torque steer. Drive specific parts more readily available, ie for the UN1-13 'box. The boot is bigger, more spares available and more cars available to buy.

A Quadra only gets lairy when you really push it, it’s inherently more stable. It launches like a rocket though if you dare stress the clutch and box, and you can do stupid maneuvers that would result in you facing the wrong way in a 2wd. 2nd gear synchro’s can be weak if you take the piss (ie flat shifting), in general the whole gearbox demands you are a little more respectful, and parts for the UN7 'box are getting challenging. With the same power, it’s considerably slower because of the extra weight (1190kg 2wd to 1430kg 4wd) and extra transmission loss. As a general rule though the whole system is pretty hardcore as long as you look after it. The power delivery can be almost disappointing compared to a 2wd because everyone loves that massive boosty punch, which is smoothed out a tiny bit by the weight and drivetrain.

Considering they’re the same car from pretty much every aspect other than the the floorplan and prop/diff/rear axle they’re a surprisingly different animal demanding different driving styles. I may have undersold the Quadra with the above, I wouldn’t part with mine. It’s been accused of being able to defy the laws of physics around the twisty B-roads, I can punch out of roundabouts on full throttle like the Enterprise hitting warp speed while a 2wd is still floundering with a steering wheel full of understeer, and I can dive into a corner under braking with the ABS going mental and the back end hanging out without ending up in a big fiery crashy bloody pile of body parts, but I do kinda miss that 2wd mental scrabble for grip when you squeeze the go-pedal.

Tough choice

Here ya go

I think for the grin factor I will stick with 2wd then Dave.I liked the 80s laggy delivery wallop.Torque steer is enjoyable as well,i must be weird, few things I didn’t know there mate, much appreciated.Invaluable as ever.
