There has been a little regret chopping the floor out of my 11 for the quattro conversion, after resolving all of its rust issues.
It took a while to source a screen too, after breaking mine years ago. That was sourced from a 4dr, with 2 dr getting really rare now. If another project one ever pops up, i’m getting it.
This one i tried to buy previously, a scrapyard in wales was offering a hillclimb car, this donor and a load of spares as a job lot and he wouldnt split.
The new owner would. He rebuilt the hillclimb car, kept the spares he wanted and this was no longer needed.
None runner for many years, lots of parts missing and damaged, and the shell ideally wants a resto. A few more years outside and its probably not worth attempting.
In short, i’ve realised i can’t restore and keep so many cars. When it was stripped i had some interest, and he requested that it was as complete as possible so it could be taken somewhere cheaper for the repairs, understandable, so i got it to this point.
After several weeks of excuses and no sale, it was offered for sale on here and to a few of you directly. With little interest it was pushed to the side, unloved for a while.
With a spare day the bonnet was popped back open, its mostly there to run. Engine wouldn’t rotate by hand, or with a bar, not forcing too hard. Plugs out, borescope in. Nothing major, an assuming rings rusted to the liners, wd40 in.
Whilst that soaked, checked a few other possibilities like jammed fly, starter, pump, alt. All ok.
Easing it off with some gentle back and forth, increasing pressure and travel. A few sticky points but eventally free’d with a few smooth rotations. Sucess!
The fuel tank is crusty, likely saveable if removed, cleaned and treated. I recall the sender is missing bits? Regardless, for a quick solution, a fuel cell mounted on timber blocks. Its temporary.
Along with the plugs, new dizzy, rotor and leads. There’s no turbo fitted so oil and waterways bypassed. Its ready to fire up.
Kind lead off for cranking. No oil pressure. Various attempts to prime the pump with the solution of cracking off the turbo feed one way valve and back filling the pump. Back to cranking, oil pressure resolved and maintains over several test cranks.
With that, the king lead back on and actually fire it up. Result!
I’ve vids to attach of the start up, a quick test as the coolant system wasn’t complete.
Coolant system was modified, replacing the oil sandwich plate with an f block version. It has a watercooled housing, allowing radiators without the oil cooler section to be used..like a spare clio one i have. Fitted..and leaked.
Swapped out for another rad.
A turbo has been sourced, fitted and it’s fired it up once again. A nice none tappety engine!
Once again, its been pushed to the side.
It is available should someone be interest
It is. I have enough cars in bits and realistically no time or efforts for the resto, so i have advertised it whilst its complete and running, with little interest.
Wish I could weld mate! I have some mechanical knowledge but never seriously played with an engine and never welded, bit of rust on this one would be too much for me sadly. Got to be someone out there with the space and skills who fancies out, it’s just finding that person.
