V6 Niggles

Hi peoples. I am celebrating 1 year with my v6. But thinking of buying the 9600 miler from Steve at R sport ! My phase 1 now has a massive 39 k on it and there are a few issues that annoy me hense thinking of a phase 2 :s Scott has looked after me and my lovely motor very well - he is a top bloke and i'm only a few miles up the road from him  I absolutely love the car but the two main things are - first gear !!!!!! sometimes- no most times it is a right bu--er to get in and the other is the warm start - engine hot leave 20 mins and turn over is really embarresing [smilie=icon_eek.gif] I hate it !! Scott mentioned different fuel pump and I respect that view but please can I have owners views 8) I appologise for my spelling and that this is my first post in 1 year since joining - I have looked on the site many times - just not posted :( I want to keep my v6 and spend another grand to get the bodywork pristine but have spent a fortune on it already :( What you guys think keep or phase 2 :s The MAIN things are the first gear issue and the hot start basically [smilie=icon_cry.gif]

The problems you list are not expectant on a ph2...
...but sometimes, such foibles described become endearing.

: )

I have a phase 1 and have the same problems. I've also had, and will have soon faster, newer cars etc etc but I've never had so much joy out of any other car than this one, however despite the grumbles I have with it, it's a one off. It's not perfect. But it's fun. And like kett said they're very endearing with huge personalities ;-)

39k is by no means massive, if anything the car will just be loosening up at that mileage. It goes without saying, the more you use these cars the better they are for it.

HI, i have a ph1, no hot start problems or first gear issues just coils? changed 9 in a year would i sell it NO, regards Alan

Hi peoples. Sorry - I just noticed the 'NOT technical issues ' - I had had a few last night  I love the car - I really do but it is just those two points that I dislike - but the reassurance that others have the same issues make me feel better :) On the milage front I just meant that most cars seem to be lower than mine and I wasn't sure if the issues with mine were because of my 39k .

Milage not an issue if you ask me, mine is on 84k now and ive loved every mile of it.. as long as its looked after it will keep on going, the v6 is not by anymeans a highly strung engine, bit of a lazy old lump really, compared to newer 4 pot lumps chucking out 270ish bhp in the leon cupra thingys, but id still choose the vee..

Great to see you posting Craig.

Ask Scott to give you a realistic price to sort everything. Way up the cost to buy the 9600 miler (which is a very nice one)

You might buy a phase II and get similar or different issues.
These are low production, fairly specialist cars that have quirks.
On the whole though any quibbles are minor in nature and to be expected for cars of this ilk.

I had an issue with my first vee and coils, but despite that bought my second and (touch wood) haven't had any problems (except for trying to get suspension parts.......).

Both of mine have been phase I and I wouldn't change to a phase II.
By the end of this week I'll have spent a small fortune on this one (getting mechanics freshened up, subtle mods and professional correction detail) over the last 6 months to have upgraded to a mint, low mileage phase II with change left over, but the thought never crossed my mind to do so.
Something about the phase I Vee, that, for me, I'm not sure I'd get from the "upgrade" to a Phase II.

64,000 miles and I've never had either of those issues , a gearbox oil change and maybe a new fuel pump would probably solve ,I've had mine for 4 years and its been a brilliant car apart from the odd coil and a weird electrical fault "now resolved" so I'd keep yours all day long rather than shell out more money for lower mileage phase 2 .plus I'd have phase1 over a phase 2 anyway :approve:

My old one has the same hot start issue you describe and had the same first gear issue when I had put a phase two gearbox on it. I tried replacing a few things to get rid of it but couldnt so i just put it down to character.

There's no guarantee you won't get issues on a low mileage car, in fact you may get even more issues through out ownership, these cars don't like just sitting around. That particular car whilst its an absolute peach, it has only been serviced twice in 7 years, I know it's only low mileage, but the service intervals are age not mileage.

Ok chaps - looks like I'll keep it [smilie=thanks.gif] I would love to spend the 18k onSteves car but I only do 1000 miles a year in mine and I - sensible head - dont really want to have a large loan hanging over me doing such low milage [smilie=icon_cry.gif] As James said Scott at SGM - He is wonderful bloke - he did say to me about changing the fuel pump but couldn't guarantee it would cure. I drove it to a friends house yesterday after picking it up from Scott (flexi clutch line leaking) When I came out there were a couple looking at it and when I tried to start it it just turned and turned and turned - then it fired up :s Was imbarrasing :( I think they thought it was knackered until I shot of at one hell of a pace !! So I'm gonna have to save some pennies and get new fuel pump - any ideas on the -problem with occational getting it into first gear though ?

Is the first gear issue when you have just started the car? I sometimes get that and all it takes is slot it into reverse then it goes straight into first. I know I have a Ph2 but give it a go next time.

Not sure about the Phase 1, but three things that usually sort gear selection issues out, assuming that the box itself and synchros are all okay, are;
1. Allow the transmission fluid to warm up first, but may not be practical if this happens only when just started up
2. Slotting in reverse as Nas describes above and/or
3. Change transmission oil, and replace with the correct spec. oil, but I am sure if Scott is looking after the car then there should be no issue with the using the correct spec. oil. If you haven't changed the oil in the last two years I would do it anyway.

Thanks guys 8) It can happen anywhen [smilie=icon_cry.gif] You could have driven a few miles - everything warm - pull up at junction and it wont slot in ! I gently try two or three times and then it goes in ! But on very rare occasions I have no issues :s
Scott had the engine out sept 12 for cam belt and lots of other things whilst it was out :)

I had the gearbissuenwith my old 172 ph1 and like others have said I just put it in second to line things up and straights into first, I just got used to it and never tried to go into fist with out going second first , it never even crossed my mind to try fiest ( first ) if that makes sence

No probs with my ph1 getting first, maybe adjustment of cables to box... And oil change.
cables / selector arm lubrication maybe help.

I spent 2 hours cleaning last night - so today thought I'd take it for a spin and show it off to the general public [smilie=yay.gif] It was only when i sat in it and did my usual 2nd to 1st I realized i was doing 3rd to 1st  Bear in mind i've been driving 24 years !! So on my small drive I did the 2ND TO 1ST !!!! And guess wat - no probs at all :) It even sounded better clean as a whistle !! Its the best drive i've had purley because I had no issues with 1st gear !! ;) It makes such a difference having NO ISSUES when you drive it :race: Oh I love it !! I can cope with a quirk if I can make it easier to live with :) God i'm thick - 3rd to 1st ????
