Update on the dead brown one

I thought the non starting issue was a dieing battery as it sounded poorly. AA man assured me the battery is in good order (it's quite new)

He bump started me very easily! only had to push the car very slowly for about 10 feet, so I drove off to Scott's garage and left it with him last night. Suspect starter motor or corroded connection he feels but will start looking into things this week.

Will post again when I hear more news.

James, I think I have a similar issue to yourself, I just had the battery replaced (from the original) as it was due a change and I had assumed up until this point that the battery was the reason for the car not turning over initially from cold. It seemed that the times it would not start up, I would not hear the beep when I half turned the key in the ignition. Is this the same case with you?

Mine has started up every time but has sometimes required some patience. When I jump in now and start her up there's a 0.5s delay before she fires up. If the problem persists, I'm going to try and find out what the beep is and where it gets it's power from, as it may be something as little as some corroded cables. Definitely not plugs or coils as all have been replaced this year.

So these look like the symptoms of a dead or starter or magnets becoming dislodged in the starter causing unreliable starting, slow cranking and needing to bump-start despite good battery power - as happened to a couple of us last year !?

Sounds just like it Martin. Was so similar to just a weak battery but then finally all I got was the dreaded click. It only dawned on me later that the air-con and everything else electrical was working at full power. Doh!

Well made my head scratch as I tried all the batteries at Halfords and the thing would crank over so slowly, Jim had the same problem and took his starter out first and confirmed the fault - which is quite common.

Starter Motor Thread

james, so long as the heated rear window works, oh and pump the tyres up as it makes it easier to push!
p.s. the heated window stops yor hands getting cold.

I did ask. Needed a new starter motor. That's all I was told.

So this is becoming reasonably common now - not quite as common as coils of course but I recall the following people who have had this issue ...

Jim
Martin (me)
Ray (IIRC)
James
Nabs0000
MattGWilson

I also recall others with various starting issues in the past.

My Vee looks like it will be needing a new starter motor too as the Vee has just begun to start poorly when hot, takes at least 4 to 5sec to start...but when the engine is cool down the engine starts without a struggle at all. I thought it might have been the battery but the battery was changed by Renault 3 weeks ago. Will have to look into this little niggle.. :s
