I used to be able to get mine to idle perfectly ( between 13.7 - 14.5 AFR ) using the mixture screw without using my AFR. You can hear the engine change note when it is idling correctly. Screw the mixture screw all the way in being careful not to overtighten it. Then 3 * 360 degree turns out. You will then have to experiment. Wind it in a little slowly till you hear the car just about stall , then gently wind it back out. You will hear the engine note change from a struggle to breathe to a perfect idle.
Without kit , thats as good as you are going to get for the idle.
There are a few things you can do with other parts When you setup the acceelrator pump rod you place a 5 mm drill bit in the throat of the carb with the butterfly open and let the butterfly shut on it. You can check the pump is compressed then. IF not you can nip it up.
