Thoughts on selling again

VII Car Care

New Member
Maybe as Im getting older other things seem more important than a nice weekend car in the garage. I've never liked the idea of the vee just sitting there, and every time we take her out I hate putting the milage on her. I can't say I love her driving her, as on a hot day its just painful & the poor turning circle really gets on my tits. I still love her to bits but Im hitting 30 this year & have no real savings! Plus I'd rather detail her & look rather than drive her.

I'll be the first to admit I have never been good with money, grew up with not much & a poor father figure so wasn't taught to apreciate money. I now regret not saving.

Tbh, I'd rather have a nice house now. The bungalow has only had the bathroom, lounge done, new rads all round & new boiler. Plus new guttering & facia's. Only been here 1 year, 6 months.

I have the 172, so could just keep that. I know If I let Betty go, I won't find another like her as a I know she is mint. Bar a few chips etc. I dunno what to do!

She's on 24,500 miles

To me she is worth 18k, and I wouldn't be happy taking any less. I know this car inside & out, love her to bits tbh. I dont need to sell, and I know John wont be happy. I though I'd put it up at 18k and see what happens. There is only 9 v6's on PH's atm.

Thoughts please guys, do i keep her? It worries me that I'll loose my job soon too. So a little panniccy too. [smilie=doubt.gif]

Life sometimes comes first (houses, children) etc so you need to do what's happy and best for you. If you feel you are hanging on to sonething that could be put to better uses (the house) then u might be better selling. However, you might miss her - as we all see the pride, time and effort you put in to her. Tricky one,

Cheers Matt, its bloody difficult. I will miss her, no doubt. Am i over pricing her?

I need to talk with John really, he's never entertained the idea of selling her

Do what ever feels right for you. The v6 is your savings, nearly 20 grands worth so font feel bad about that. Most people these days still don't have any savings behind them at 30 (or Older) Life costs too much!

I sold my old one (at great sadness) for a house deposit. Got on the ladder & ended up with another one a year or so after as I missed it too much! It was too big a part of me to give up. They are a pain to live with sometimes and are not practical so can understand why you feel the way you do.

Could always get a cheaper mint phase one if you miss the v6 but don't want all the cash in the car?

If it makes any difference, the cars value will only go up over the next 10-20 years.

It's got to be the cleanest black gold around then I'd say 18k
You're not desperate to sell by the sounds of it so you could stuck her up at that price and see what happens

cheers fella's. My thoughts Matt, on advertising her.

I never thought I could get so atatched to a car [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

Cheers Dunc, im really stuck as what to do.

I know what you mean about the v6 and savings, mine owes me nothing but the Vee is basically my ISA, it just sits there apart from around 600 miles per year (even less this year) and I do get occasional thoughts about just selling it and buying a nice fast daily drive...

But ultimately... I've sold 2 vee's before and always came back, I have the car, milage and colour I want so this always overrides any other thoughts!

Only you will know what decision is best for you, but think carefully as once it's sold... It's gone!

Btw £18k is about bang on!

I was in you posistion last year Dawn. If you don't need the money, don't do it for a start. Take it off the road, put it up for a year, don't spend a penny on it and that means cleaning products too! Not a penny. I took mine off the road 18 months ago and haven't as much as cleaned it. The money I've saved is massive. The engine conversion I'm undertaking hasn't cost me a penny either. Thats come from selling car related bits I no longer wanted. The vee is now sitting on the driveway and although I haven't drove it for so long, I'm itching to get it done ready for a drive in 2013.
If you are desperate for a few £k do want Dunkan said. Sell it and get a tidy ph1. Not too tidy as your more than capable of getting one back to A1 condition. Eventually ph1 and 2 prices will merge and get higher, you will have a rarer car than before, a few more bob will be in the bank and you'll be living the dream.

tricky one for you to contemplate but i was in the same dilemma this year when we knew another baby was on the way. I had the vee in the garage looking like a new penny, with only 500 miles covered in a year. My thoughts were its too much money to leave in the garage as a trophy as i loved to look at it but struggled to enjoy driving it. I then decided if i had 2 kids then it would be driven even less and on my own as my wife had fell out of love with the car (she used to love going for drives with me in it). Decision was made to sell and my present to my self was to order a new range rover so i have a new car to take my mind off selling the vee.

i feel that you have now spoken twice about selling so your heart isn't in it. I sold mine almost 2 months ago and i havent really missed it TBH, combination of my new car which i love and the new baby in the house which takes up most of my time. Will i be back in a vee? probably at some point.

price wise i will share my example as a guide. Titanium with 3 owners and 19k on the clock in mint condition and standard. Advertised for £15,250 and sold a week later for £15,250 no haggling. Too cheap? possibly, but i was happy to move it on and let someone else enjoy.

Ironically i have the vee money sat in my savings account and i probably wont want to touch it as i want to return to a 'toy' car when the kids are bigger. Ariel atom is always a car i have wished to own.

As you say needs and priorities change over time and atm the vee wasn't a priority for me. Do what u feel is best im sure you will make the right choice!!!!!!!

I would keep hold of it for as long as possible. Even take it off the road, SORN saving you money on tax, insurance, fuel put her under a cover and hopefully see it go up in value or fall in love with it again. Also save money on cleaning products....

Dawn

Your situation is very similar to my own. I've obviously yo-yo'd between having a Vee and not having a Vee (5 times now LOL) and to be honest, I've never been 100% happy either way (great to have the money but miss the car and visa versa). One thing I will say though is that there are some amazing Vee's out there and letting your car go doesn't mean that you won't find something as good, if not better, should you change your mind in the future. I feel very lucky to have stumbled across Steve's car plus there's others, like Duncan, who have picked up amazing examples for a great price at the right time.

You've also stated that you enjoy detailing her probably more than driving her. You seem to have a great trade going in detailing other people's cars so it seems like the fun would go on even if you did part with Betty. I don't think you'd need to advertise your car to be honest, lots of people know about it and you'd probably be able to sell to a new member via PM's.

In the defense of keeping the Vee, it's good to have something which is worth a chunk of money and that adds value to your life but could be offloaded at reasonably short notice if needed. A lot of people tie up too much of their disposable income on mortgages / holidays etc. and don't have an easy exit strategy when things take a turn for the worse. I'm not saying Vee's are a great investment but they're nowhere near as bad as some might think if you look after them.

If the car owe's you nothing then try to keep her, if you have finance against it then maybe sell but leave the door open to return to ownership as you WILL miss her.

How emotionally attached are you to the car and what it brings you ?

You will still have the friends if you sell and arguably all the detailing requests and enjoyment you currently have. In future you will find/make the opportunity to own a Vee again if that is important to you whilst in the meantime other things have become more important - understandably so.

Obviously there is no point in selling unless you get an amount which makes it worthwhile to persue your other goals and so, if you decide to sell be realistic about what you want/need for the car and don't settle for any less otherwise you may risk feeling hard done by for two reasons - selling and not having enough for it.

Try not to let yourself get into a position where you 'have' to sell otherwise your hand might be forced, if something feels right it usually is. So finally if this is building up to 'having' to sell then be pragmatic now.

Best of luck with your decision Dawn ...

Martin

If you put yours up for 20k, i'll put mine up for 20k! Let's get the prices up for the V6's!

You've made a compelling enough case to sell. I'm in the same boat, i want a house and a big garage, but i also want another car...House wins everyday!

Well if Ali puts his up for £20k, I'll be having to put mine up for £35k :) Worth every penny! :)

Do it, i'm all for that notion of bumping the value up!

35k lol...technically it's worth about 18k+2k for a full Paint job. ;)

What's the point in trying to inflate market prices if the majority of us have bought the car for keeps?.....
It's all relative I guess and I think owners can't up prices only buyers can.

But if someone offered 35k etc some owners may sell up despite the keeper for life statement. Well worth a try.

See what you mean nas but there will still always (currently) be those cars for sale at 16k so surely the buyer Market will see the cars at 35k and the ones at 16k on pistonheads (for instance).....

It would be fine if all the Clio v6 owned were by club members and ones all in circumstances where they were in no rush to sell but that world be an ideal Market scenario where the sellers had the power.

I think, until the day comes where there is one maybe two cars per year going up for sale - in which scenario the owners can put whatever pricetag they wish to their cars we can't dictate or change the Market as there will always be cheaper, not necessarily better examples out there for sale.
