The damage

shinji

New Member
The cause: Car parked on street behind big-arse lorry truck. Truck reversed at walking speed and the pics speaks for themselves.
(I wasn't even in the car when it happened. Gutted)

Bonnet:

Bonnet: Close-up of the damage

Left Front Fender (cracked and cut through)

Can the bonnet be repaired? or need a replacement since it is aluminium.
Can the fender be repaired? is it still fibreglass or some fancy irrepairable composite material?

Truck insurance is not paying out a lot after taken depreciation into account (CB1A, 2001/2002). Car is in HK.

Thanks guys....

Sorry to see that mate ,just look at it as it could of been a lot worse .the bonnet looks beyond repair and for what they cost replace it ,the bumper looks easily repairable luckily and as you said is fibre glass so should be easy fix for a descent body shop .good luck :approve:

New bonnet I would say. Are you sure it is aluminium?

Bumper repair, much cheaper than a new one.

Hope you get it all fixed soon.

Count yourself very VERY lucky. That could have been so much worse. Double check the bonnets ally. Not all ph1s used them I believe. All in all its a very easy fix.

Gutted for you but as already said could have been so much worse!

What is the weight diffrence between an aluminium and standard bonnet? I'm not sure what I have :s

Would maybe want the heavier option to get a bit of weight down at the front?

Gutting to see this Shinji. As others have said, it might have been a lot worse. I was always lead to believe that v6's didn't have the ally bonnet used on the early ph1 172's. That said, I was once chatting to a French guy that runs an Alpine forum, in France.. who was equally under the impression that ph1 v6's had ally bonnets. Unfortunately ally bonnets are no longer available from Renault, so if you wanted new, it would be steel unless you found a second hand ally bonnet.. they are out there, but rare.is there any damage under the bonnet, to the slam panel? Bumper is an easy fix for someone familiar with fibreglass.

Colour matching iceberg might be your biggest problem.

Just try a magnet on it Ben :)

Thanks all you guys for your replies [smilie=thanks.gif]

The damage was actually done in 2010. I didn't write about it here cos it hurts so much. Given almost 3 years since the bonnet was damage no signs of rust can be seen, so I'm assuming it is aluminium (but happy to be corrected). No damage from the slam panel underneath the bonnet and I couldn't see any real deformations to the strengthening ribs on the underside of the bonnet.

I have found the part number for the bonnet and Renault badge but I want to double check with you guys so when I order I won't missed any little parts:

77 51 469 454 - Bonnet
82 00 027 424 - Badge
77 03 081 212 - Badge screw (looks like I only need one of those, is that right?)

What are the Renault prices for these parts? Just want to make sure Renault HK won't slap on a huge premium on it.

Ok I stand corrected! I just tried the aluminium-test with a magnet.......and it sticks

I think the bonnet is the same as any other Clio bonnet? Which means you can just try get secondhand from new territories?

Sorry to hear this.

You may find a few Fibreglass or Carbon Fibre bonnets for sale, but losing weight of the front isn't really a benefit.

It can be worthwhile asking a yacht builder (fiberglass) to look at the bumper, if you're close to one.
As they usually do good work and can sometimes be cheaper than a body shop that usually works in metal.

Bonnet £182.93
Badge £27.80
Retaining clip for badge £1.22

Thanks for the info James!
At that price they are actually cheaper than the front discs! I guess the freight for the bonnet would be the killer.

@Wongy do you know of any breakers in NT? Given the price I'm tempted to just get a new one.

@Alpineandy thanks for the tip. But I actually don't know any yacht builders in HK and whether they would want to take a job like that. Funnily enough the guys at work said that same thing about getting the panel to the yacht guys as well.

I trawl the web and found the Renault paint code of

Iceberg silver 640

I don't know how such info can be useful to the panel beaters :/

How difficult is it paint-match iceberg silver?

P.S. Also found the paint code for Lunar Grey D60 and I really like that colour. My current fantasy would be re-spray the whole in D60. How would a Ph1 look in lunar grey?

It's just a standard Clio bonnet so you could maybe find another one in HK from a less rarer clio ?

Or go for a carbon one imported from say the UK and not bother about painting it ?

Martin

The aluminum bonnets on on the Phase 1 172 are noticeably lighter than the steel bonnets. To find out if your was aluminum all you need is a magnet. A magnet will not stick to aluminum as it is a non-ferrous metal.

That's an aluminium bonnet ... you can tell by the way it has damaged ... A top panel guy will be able to fix it , but it will be expensive (and will still need refinishing) If it came from the factory with that bonnet then you should do this ... if it is an after-thought , ditch it for a new genuine Renault Panel ... good luck with the paint match ;)

Even with that damage , that iceberg ally bonnet will pull a surprising amount (in the UK)

I suspect that all those early phase 1 172 "ally" folk are actually driving around with the few hundred bonnets that were obviously , originally designed and manufactured for our Vees !

I originally did too think it was an ally bonnet cos the damages was done almost 3 years ago! It certainly doesn't look or felt like steel but I did try the magnet test on it........and the magnet sticks the bonnet. I guess my vee wasn't lucky enough to get the ally bonnet from factory.
