temp sender

Took the car for MOT the other day passed like a dream with the inspection guy giving the car a proper good look over.

Anyway back to question, the car was running for quite some time 4 the MOT and the temp got really high. To the stage where it went on to the 2 nodule markers on the gauge. I know the front fans are working fine with 2 speeds on them. However i have never had my side pod fans working, They should of came in alot sooner if they were working surely?

Was in Karens vee a few weeks ago in traffic and her side pod fans came on on the half way mark. Is this what is shoud expect from mine?

I have unplugged the join from the main loom and put accross a battery so i know the fans are working wen the signal is there.

So was thinking of callin in at my local reno to price up and have a look on their screen at a temp sender unit that goes in the side of the head?

Any other ideas before i tootle off to the main stealer would be a great help.

Steve :?

One works on water temperature and the other works on the temperature in the engine compartment if I remember correctly. So what happened would be quite normal at this time of year.

I think within the engine compartment there is an air temp device, not sure if this is to do with the ECU or the fans.

Will have anoter look and try and find a wiring diagram.

Steve,

Have sent you an E mail with some drawings that may be of help.

Fan relay located at back of car.

In my view as long as the front cooling fans are working correctly I would not be too bothered.

The other fan works on are temp and may be the temperature measured as indicated.

John, any idea where the transmission fluid temperature sensor/coolant sensor is in the MK1. I think mine is broken? Any diagrams?

Cannot find any thing on theb transmission fluid temp.

Nothing listed on the fault list, therefore I would assume it is not covered.

John - Printed the stuff you e-mailed me, had a look at the car today all the fuses are ok, Is there anyway of testing the relays are working ok?

On the engine diagram - no.15 (Fuel vapour recycling solenoid valve) Will this be linked with the side pod fans as wen it gets really hot ( i think) the fuel is vapourising as i turn the engine off, leave it for a bout 10 mins come back to starting it and it will turn over and struggle to start - like its pumping the fuel in but not kicking in. I have replaced the spark plugs with NGK platinums.

Steve

Tim,

A short circuit on the sensor (coolant) or a short circuit on the two tracks of the sensor will not necessarily be detected by the diagnostic tool. 9the computer gives priority to defect mode rather than displaying the faul) but the overheating warning light will switched on, the fans will switch on at second speed and the coolant temperature will be set to 120 degrees C on the diagnostic tool (substitution value)

The next bit is a bit diffult to test, resistance of sensor should be about 5000 ohms plus or minus 150 ohms.
