Suspect gearbox noise... 19 16v cab

For the past few weeks I have had a knocking noise and a metal rattley circular motion noise on my car (passenger side) and I was pretty sure it was my 2 front driveshafts.

I also noticed my front right engine mount had sheared in two and my engine was at a slight angle which made me think even more it was my shafts due to the angle they had been at for sometime.

So today I went out and fitted a new engine mount and two recon driveshafts then went out for a drive to check it out and there is no difference at all with my car, both noises are still there. I have checked the wheel bearing out on the passenger and it's very rough (not even 6 months old, the joys of 18in 35 series tyres)

I think the bearing could be the source of some of the noise but the metal rattley noice sounds like it could be coming from the gearbox? It's had 3.5 litres of new gear oil and all my gears work perfect.

Does the gearbox have a bearing that might have gone or does anyone have any other ideas?

The nut on the end of 5th gear sometimes comes loose. Easily accessible under the endcap

I say, fix what you know is wrong first, the wheel bearing, then evaluate any other noises.

By the way, you did not say whether these noises are there when the car is in motion, or sitting with the engine running.

Sitting with the engine running, the input shaft of the gearbox is being turned at the same rpm as the engine, and may help you find a gearbox noise.

If the nut is loose what does it do to the inside of the box?

I jacked my car up and moved the wheel from side to side and inside the gearbox sounds like its really loose.

New bearing ordered, on idle there are no noises from the gearbox at all, driving between 30-40 mph either on or off the throttle the noise is there.

When the car is revved on the spot there is no noise, when driving in any gear I can hear the noise.

If the diff circlip had gone you'd have no drive at all.

Can you elaborate a bit on this:

I took my passenger driveshaft out and I wiggled the diff/cup where the shaft fits in. The was around 3mm of movement when I pushed it in and out.

When i'm coasting in neutral it also rattles and it rattles when I put the clutch in too.

Think the diff is knackered

I am rather ashamed to admit this one after having worked on numerous reno's... The noise was a collapsed wheel bearing! I got a cheap wheel bearing off Ebay for £13 a few months ago and it completely disintergrated inside, thats what the sound was. I have herd lots of bearings go but not like this one had. My gearbox must just meant to be like it is but I think I am going to get a diff circlip to see if it takes up the slight play.

Fitted my new one earlier and its running fine again

Lesson learned, never listen to any advice I give beacuse I have no idea what I am on about

13 quid is cheap even for the bay, in any case if youre replacing the diff circlip it may be worth going for that drill in option to stop the pop
