strange grinding noise????

When I pull away and through the gears up to around 3krpm I hear a strange grinding noise? after 3krpm the noise goes so im a bit confussed... The strange thing is it only dose it sometimes, I dont think that it is the gearbox or driveshaft as if it was it would be doing it all the time. could it be the clutch or gearbox oil??? the clutch dosenot slip if that helps, I have a mk1 vee with frsh, thanx

My guess.

The standard ssshing noise of the MK 1 gearbox at very low speed.

is this a problem as I have had the car for around a month now and never heard b4??? it dont do it all the time but when it does it can be rather loud and rather annoying!!!

If gearbox should be low I would have that dipped to check the level. There is a little dipstick tool for doing this. See http://www.v6clio.net/forum/viewpost.php?p=70261&f=2

While you're at it have the car on a ramp and check out exhaust hanger rubbers etc.

mine makes that noise too (Although its more 1.5-2k revs), its only every now and then though, i find if you just raise the revs it goes.

i think quite a few do it, theres loads of similar threads on here.

i remember someone saying it was the exhaust heatshield rattling.
