stop and warning light flickering?

Addz

New Member
just recently if i accelerate hard then let off or brake suddenly or go over a big bump the stop and handbrake warning light flash up briefly, any idea's what this could be?

Check the brake fluid level and condition of the reservoir cap as it has a sensor on it. :approve:

Yeh - Use!!!!!!

Is this not supposed to be a sealed system Tim..? Where is it escaping to through use..? Surely its not evaporating..? Isnt the most likely result of low fluid level (unless there's a leak) through the pads being worn through use and not the fluid..? I'm no mechanic by any stretch of the imagination.. just seems logical if there's no leak.

I've put 12k on my Vee over the past 20months, and not had to top up the fluid. When I fitted new front pads last Spring, the level came back up. I did have new pads fitted to the rear about 6 months later, so they would have toped up the reservoir whilst doing that.. as the system was bled.

i'd also say check the brake fluid level. My 182 did that once when going round a motorway on ramp at a good speed
Then went out again, the fluid was down. Dont no why was fine again for the next few years till i sold it

Is the handbrake level a little slack/loose in it's off position ? Maybe its just jigging around and the switch underneath (I assume the Vee has one) is sensitive ? I have known this on some cars ...

It is a sealed system but as the brake pads wear the pistons in the calipers move inwards - something has to fill the gap and that's why the fluid level drops. It's also why you need to loosen the lid when you wind the pistons back because then the fluid needs to flow back again...

mine did the same when my rear pads were worn out. defintely due to low fluid level, so check the pads :approve:

Having had new pads all round today, I was pleased to see how much friction material there was on the new ones. Makes the paltry couple of millimeters left on my old one even more shocking [smilie=icon_redface.gif], but also explains why the fluid does drop significantly over the life time of a standard set of pads.
