I'm back to UK tomorrow (
Day before I left for holiday my V6 refused to start.
Just solenoid clicking ? Push started fine !
But have to sort out on my return. James said its
Likely the starter motor gone !? Can't find any links on others
Havin the problem !?
It happens..
Also check the battery + positive and negative connections. Does the power reach the starter motor? A bad connection or lack of power can also lead to starter malfunctions. :approve:
The air-con etc etc work fine !?
It started an hour before the second start of the day with no problems !?
I guess it's just the starter had enough !! I'll get the basics checked before re-placing.
My car has an issue whereby the key is turned all i hear is 'click', I try again 'click', I try again and it clicks and turns over.
Sometimes it will start the first time the key is turned, other times it will take 4 or 5 turns of the key and subsequent clicks before I assume the starter motor kicks in and it turns over. Its not a case of it trying to turn over and failing, as you'd get with a very low battery. Some days it will be start up fine every single time, other times all I get is 'clicks'
Well mines "clicking" )
It's off to the garage on Monday for them to investigate but reading the links Janes sent I'm prepared for a new starter to be on the cards to get it fixed !?
All good thoughts !
I will get them checked ! But I am fearful it's the starter motor. Don't know why ? It had started fine an hour previously.
I will report back.
Well I had all the basic checks done to make sure the non starting was nothing simple / cheap ? but its definitely the starter motor itself !
New one being fitted on Tuesday
Had the starter replaced yesterday.
RSport had a long job as the nuts holding the Cat on proved impossible to get off !! ( they dropped the subframe slightly to gain a little access and replaced the studs and nuts. The next step if this hasn't been successful was to drop the engine !?!?.
Anyway, all works as it should now.
Starter price has just been reduced in price along with some other parts !? £170 plus fitting.

The starter replacement can be fiddly if the cat and exhaust heat shield nuts/bolts are corroded. Apart from that the work can be done with a good selection of tools in a garage in a couple of hours but this might not be to everyones taste or abilities. There are various starter options and £170 is not a bad price as the OEM Renault one can be well over £200 but a pattern replacement is around £120 from memory.
The heat from the engine can cause the magnet bindings to fail which seems to be quite common - this in turn causes slow starting as the magnets detach inside the starter body creating more friction and electrical resistance. Sometimes a bigger or charged battery will appear to overcome the issue but if more of the magnets detach things will get worse and worse ... with a new starter and fully charged or new battery the difference in cranking speed is noticeable ...
I guess it will fail again in 9/10 years !?
It was an OEM replacement, £170 was not bad I thought ! Renault had just reduced the prices but I did get charged 3 hours labour !
Thanks for your words on email before I sent car to the garage to be sorted.
I like to know why things are being repaired and have failed.
You certainly made sure I sort of knew why it was being repaired and I was spending !!
Thank you
Nigel
