Speedo

My speedo not working every now and again all the gauges stop and the dash goes trough it start up check, all warning light on, oil OK sign, this while i am driving along.

I'm thinking speedo unit maybe nackered,

Any ideas, part number in the forum parts listing being shown as being 8200253735, is there a newer number, will a 172/ 182 one fit, or will the rev counter be wrong, 6 sparks instead of 4 ?

Thanks

Steve

Hi,
Electronic Seedo's are driven from a pulse generator and will work on any car providing the reluctor pick up is the correct one for the car. Rev counters are run from the crank shaft sensors or front pully sensors there is a differance between 4 and 6 cylinder rev counters.

Nigel.

I gather the speedo pluses come from the ABS sensor on the nearside front wheel, as the ABS light is not on, i am presuming its ok. so if the panel is at fault can you just change the speedo head or change over the rev counter ? in to a new unit.

STEVE, have a spare so i can tell you what you need to know, ring me if you wish, rev counter pulse is from crank sensor as already mentioned, which pulses once per rev as on all cars ( THINK ABOUT IT ) so yes the others will work, redline is different though for the v6, i think.

Hi Spike

Thinking about it, I will inspect the wiring down by the ABS pump as it did have some damage, dont know how the speedo gets its pluses from the ABS sensor, but my abs unit took a good wack in the accident, so it could be at fault in that its not giving out a signal to the speedo, if thats were it comes from, but does not fix the insturment panel in that it cuts out completly and goes though its self check while on the move. Car was petty damp sitting around for years, so curicuit boards could be buggered, just dont fancy taking off the dash top again :s

But i'll look into it tomorrow and let you know.

Cheers

STEVE, have had a think and will gladly lend you a set of clocks, i will take the ones out of my car as i know these are 100% ok, but:
as these are out my car i will need them back PDQ,
i dont want any messing with them as they are perfect,
and of course, if you pop em you will have to pay for them.
i will ring you over the weekend and try and get these out of the car monday or tuesday, i have some work to do on it so will be ok for a week or so.

Hi Spike

Top man, see PM

Just a bit of info, if the speedo gets its info from the near side ABS sensor, it them must go to a box in the boot next to the ECU, called a speedo interface, were the main ECU gets the car speed info for engine managerment, so if the engines running OK sound more like the clocks.

V6 clocks on the car a special build, i think, due to the sticker on the back of the clocks that says V6 UK model.

this maybe due the the larger wheels on the car.

Steve

steve, have got the clocks out, will get them packed up and ready to post as soon as, will ring you before i post.

Spike I can't beleive you would do this ! top man
Steve I can't help thinking this is a wiring fault, if you did a dash reset I beleive all the clock needles go through a full scale deflection. If they do then clocks must be ok ? I think ??

Feel really bad, spikes removed his clocks from his spare car, now i think i found a replacement set on the bay.

So a public SORRY to spike for wasting his time :s

I hope these new ones will do the trick.

If i blow them up i will be glad there not Spikes as he wanted them back i tact.

Steve

The ABS sensor does provide the signal in Kilopascals then there is a chip on a circuit board behind the dash that then does the maths that converts the signal so that the speedo can read correctly. The chip is more likly to fail more than the speedo head itself.

thanks for the apology steve but not needed, just to put you straight, the clocks are out of the running car not the spare scrap one as i don't know that they are ok.
hope that does not make you feel worse.
