Sorn - Sensible steps?

Duncan

Well-Known Member
Just sorned my v6 for the first time as dont need it over the winter.

As ive never done this before, are there any sensible measures to take?

Is it better to just leave it, or should i just start it up every few weeks?

Worth disconnecting the battery or getting a solar trickle charger? (no power in garage).

Any advise & general maintenance tips appreciated!!

A few finals recent pics of her before i tuck her away!!!

I would have thought a trickle charger would be the best option, but seeing as though you've got no power in garage....

Start up once a week for about 10 mins I'd probably do myself, though don't know the correct answer

Before mine went to Scott's I'd left it for 7 months with the battery disconnected. Popped the battery back in and it fired up first time and ran absolutely fine. No issues since as far as I'm aware though haven't seen the car since June!!

Fitting a good strong solar panel to the outside of your garage won't harm it.
Regular visits (dreaded Mice like to hibernate in Vee engine bays!) and regular running can help towards keeping the coils happy at least. Coils don't seem to like long periods sat idle for some reason.
Our Vee was at Scotts for around 2 months and on departure a Coil went on me!

PS, stunning car you have there Duncan :approve:

That really is stunning!

I would recommend a trickle charger would it be possible to run this of another car battery as a source of power? Also I wouldn't recommend just going to start as surely that will run the battery down more if the car isn't being moved/run?

Such a minter Dunc!

I just pull mine out & run her for 10 mins every 2 months or so. Left her 3 months without a start up & she was fine

I tried the solar panel route - but it was tosh!

Best bet is to remove the battery to trickle charge elsewhere. It's a two minute job.

If you can get some mains power to the garage - then that'll save you a load of bother in the long run. :approve:

I used a 12" x 4" solar panel on my 850R whilst in the Falklands for 4 months a few years ago. The Solar was unable to keep the battery topped up as it lost the battle to keep up with the constant trickle to the alarm. The battery was flat flat [smilie=icon_eek.gif] That was a few years ago now and I dare say the technology/power of them has improved. Getting one twice the size that I used should be better. Many of the larger panels are now folding ones making storage easier.

I would certainly look at hooking the Vee up to a battery conditioner if you can - keeps the battery fresh and also enables the standby electronics to function. I have adopted this approach for years without a problem.

Once a month run the engine up to temperature, depress all pedals about 4-5 times each, and whilst engine is running, check all electrics (lights, elec. windows etc) and turn AC on.

Leave doors and tailgate slightly ajar so that the rubbers are not completely compressed - this is more relevant if you plan on going away for a couple of months and will not have the opportunity to start the car as mentioned above.

Hope this helps.

Mine is getting a trickle charger on this weekend for the winter - ive actually hard wired it from the battery to a small neat plug in by the pedals so i dont even need to open the bonnet to charge over the winter. But this is just cause i have power in the garage. Its done bugger all miles this year as the summer has been so poo - maybe 200 miles only!

I also put mouse traps in the car as last year the mouses got in and nibbled the dash top, jack box in the boot and the drivers seat! little buggers!!! [smilie=icon_eek.gif]
