As promised, below is the history of my ownership to date.
Cast your mind back to 2001. I had been doing the maths on whether I could afford the car for a few months but I kept coming across the same obstacle CAR INSURANCE!! being aged 21 and only ever being a named driver on my sisters and parents cars I was looking at £2,300 a year [smilie=icon_eek.gif]
I noticed that the local Renault dealership had a free insurance offer on Clio's so I'd thought I'd see if I could persuade them to offer me it on V6. As you can imagine the offer didn't include the V6 but after over a month of negotiations and I managed to secure £1,500 off the car [smilie=yay.gif] £500 deposit paid just had to wait now.
The car took around 6 months to arrive with regular letters from Renault giving you updates and letting you know which production number you had been allocated. You could always call the V6 hotline for an update too. Before the car arrived I received a signed caricature of Jenson Button back when he used to drive for Renault and way before he came world champion.
Still hangs in my study along with picture I took at the NEC
They were under strict instructions at the garage not to drive it or even fill it up and it had 4 miles on the clock when I collected it at the end of April 2002. I didn't need much convincing that year to drive anywhere, work trips which are over 4 hours away which id said no to for years were all of sudden not an issue. I remember taking it to Alton Towers and returning to a crowd of people surrounding the car and peering inside. Nothing much has changed over the years, i was up in North Yorkshire this year and people were still pausing to take pictures.
I had issues with the car starting first time which was tracked down to the engine coils and fixed under warranty. Had no issues since.
2003 I was invited to Bedford Autodrome on a track day where I learnt the outer limits of the car and beyond!!
This is the only time the car has been used on track and also where the lowest ever MPG figure of just 4 was recorded. It tends to sit around the 28 to 32 mark depending on how hard your pressing on.
In 2004 I purchased a Caterham for track day use and still own that too. I did mean the V6 got a little less use that year while I ran the Caterham in but they are very different machines and each has its own time and place for use.
Many trips back and forth to Norfolk at various times of the year to visit the my girlfriends (now wife) parents. This is a 4hr journey in a standard car but can done in 3hr 20mins in a V6! Its not that you break the speed limit, its that your average speed is higher because you can dispatch 2 cars and a HGV with safety and ease.
Fast forward to 2007 and we took a road trip down to Monaco.
This is a holiday we would never have done if it wasn't for the V6 and it got more attention on the harbor than all the Ferraris etc. which were ten a penny. Its such a comfortable car on long journeys and can be left in 6th for a lazy cruise down the motorways and brought to life on the correct road through the Alps.
2009 saw a trip over to Ireland for a friends wedding. Whilst all the other guests decided to fly, we had so much fun driving to Monaco we took the ferry to Dublin and drove all the way round Ireland stopping for the wedding in the middle.
2010 was our biggest adventure when we did a round trip to Rome.
This included a stop off at the Porsche factory and museum in Germany and 144 MPH reached on the Autobahn.
A Drive through the swiss alps
into northern Italy
A big thumbs up from the Italian police while leaving Rome and a flat battery in Pisa. It was the same battery that had been on the car since new and I don't think it liked the heat in Rome. The look on the Italian AA mans face when I opened the bonnet to reveal no engine was priceless! As was the comments of the mechanics at the Italian version of Halfords "We've only ever seen this car in video games"
Last stop was the Versailles place hotel outside of Paris where the concierge couldn't find the door handle and they opened the boot to discover a V6 engine where our bags should be. When he asked if I would like him to park the car I replied no thank you I'll do it myself.
We both still class this as our best every Holiday and it wouldn't have been the same without the V6.
Which is why it was used as our wedding car earlier this year
Its been serviced by Renault every 2 years and had all the belt and water pump changes. Its in mint condition and done 25315 miles and still smells like new inside. I've used swissvax wax on it form new and can highly recommend it. And the dog comes in handy for those hard to reach places.
It gets taxed every year around March depending on the weather and sorned around October if I haven't got anything specific planed for it later in the year.
I have had Michelin pilot sport tires on it until last year when I fitted a set of Avon ZV5 to the rears. What a difference they've made! Not sure how long they will last but I don't care, the feel and confidence even in the wet is fantastic. I can t wait to wear the front Michelins out. I have driven a mark 2 on road and on circuit and still prefer the rawer edge of the mark 1. These cars take time to master and that's probably why it keeps me coming back for more.
The decision to buy this car all them years ago was one of the best i've ever made and I certainly have no plans on selling it anytime soon.
Especially now my insurance is now a more sensible £600.
I'm proud to say that my first car was a Clio V6.
