Servicing / Cleaning your PiperX Viper
Ok, Many owners have fitted a PiperX to their Vee and according to the manufacturers, they should be cleaned / serviced each year. With that in mind I decided to visit me old mate Mossy and have a look to see if PiperX were telling the truth.
First steps
Removal of exterior engine covers
Removal of surrounding covers
Removal of inner engine cover
Once done, locate the PiperX and carefully unclip the 3 spring loaded clips that hold the filter to the main housing. This should be fairly straightforward depending on how your induction kit was fitted (the previous owner had fitted mine and the clip on the underside was very close to the bracket which made it a little difficult to unclip. Once all 3 are unclipped you can pull apart the two units to reveal the actual filter
As you can see, PiperX were telling the truth and these do need to be cleaned yearly! Empty any residue into the bin and get a damp cloth
Wipe away the dirt and grime that sits inside the housing unit, then get a bucket of warm soapy water.
Thoroughly clean out the filter (the water will become very dirty, very quickly)
Give it a final rinse using a hosepipe (Do NOT use a pressure washer as it is far too powerful for the foam element)
Apply a microfibre cloth to the element all the way around to allow any excess water to fall away, then leave to dry NATURALLY for approx 30 minutes
Do NOT use a hairdryer or heating equipment to speed the process up, it will only result in melting / destroying the foam.
Using a Dirt retention Oil, apply the spray in linear strokes along the outside of the filter
Dirt Retention Oil (product code C9007)
Spray a small amount to the inside of the filter to help protect it from "Hoovering" up nasty pieces and dirt
Allow the unit to stand for 10 min or so and voila...thats it!
Just a case of carefully refitting your PiperX

There certainly seems to be a difference now its been serviced. The noise "feels" cleaner but how much of that is pyschological im not sure. The throttle response seems better and more instant :approve:
