So what with owning a garage I have customers and customers with friends etc. So I get offered cars quite a lot.
Now I had been pondering a diesel for the mrs as when I finally get the Discovery sorted even with its LPG conversions its going to be dear to run.
The laguna she has just now whilst its been a reliable old bus its getting a bit long in the tooth.
So it just so happened a D5 came in from a friend of a regular customer. It wasn't good news it needed money thrown at it.
So basically with a bit of back and forth we settled on £400, for which I got a dark blue D5 04 S60, with full on pimp tints on the rear windows, with a lot of problems, but, the 2 most important aspects worked, the heated seats and air con are fully functional.
So what exactly is wrong with the car?
Battery,
Cambelt,
Water pump,
Intercooler burst,
Engine mounts,
Needed serviced,
Wishbone bushes,
Offside brake spring missing (damaged alloy as well),
Handbrake at best a suggestion rather than a functional device,
EGR clogged
and some other stuff I can't remember.
So best get to work...
[BREAK=EGR clean up]
So Lets start with the EGR system.
The rubber pipe was badly clogged up but being rubber squashing it and hitting it off the bin got all the dry soot out of it. However the alloy elbow, the cooler and the actual valve took more effort.
So elbow off and it was not the worst I have seen but it wasn't good. I got pictures of the elbow easily enough but I was very dirty when it came to the actual valve and cooler so no good pics of that.

Next off came the inlet manifold upper cover. This wasn't too bad really, but best clean it.

sadly no afters but it cleaned up like the elbow did. So clean and shiny.
[BREAK=Intercooler and TCV solenoid]
So I bought another intercooler from ebay, cheap and quickly delivered. Works great so far.
My feet are in the shot to prove Chet right as always

In this picture you can see where it lives, right in the middle of the radiator pack. That is AC condesor, then intercooler then the radiator. Its not a bad job to change really.

Next since the elbow etc was off I pulled the TCV (turbo control valve) out to clean it. This valve modulates the VNT atuator on the turbo, it differs from usual ones in that it has a fresh air connection to actual fresh air with a small filter. Also with it out I can cycle it with my pulser and flush it through.

Filter cover off to expose the mesh

Cleaned up and worked the same as it did. So fine then.
[BREAK=Cambelt and water pump]
Cambelt kit and water pump time. This turned out to be original with 140k on them! Borrowed time as always.
You can make out the water pump was actually leaking, also note inner cv gaiter with cable tie...

Belt off, water pump, idler and tensioner off

Old water pump, nice and clean cooling system on the car though

Where it was leaking on the outside

New pump and cambelt kit fitted

All good for a few years.
[BREAK=Service time]
Service time, this was nothing amazing but it did end up being expensive, to be fair all this work happened at once so I was out a lot of money at 1 time.
New battery fitted (£95!!!!!), new filters (done an oil and filter change twice in 4 weeks), new strut top mounts were fitted as well. Which led to me sorting out the cable tied cv gaiter with a proper clip.
Old and new diesel filter

Old and new air filter

I took the driveshaft out and pulled the inner joint apart for a thorough clean and nice new grease

I then done the spring top mounts which are a common issue on the Volvos.
[BREAK=Handbrake]
The handbrake on the P2 cars is terrible because they done away with the drum adjusters. However they went back and you can fit the adjusters in them. So I did.
I got the handbrake stuff before the adjusters so I had to do the job again, well kind of so I could put the adjusters in. The handbrake is now excellent.
New shoes and spring kit but before the adjusters arrived.

Nice new adjusters from ebay

Adjusters and original H plates

Adjuster fitted, also fitted new handbrake cables

All done and handbrake perfect.
[BREAK=Where it is now]
So as of today its in daily use, nothing else is immediate in needing attemtion aside from 1 engine mount. I managed to adapt a petrol models poly bush into the top mount.
Heres some random pictures.

I also decided to step away from my usual Uniroyal Rainsport 3's. I got a set of Dunlop Sport Bluresponse for it. I have to say the RS3's are far better.
Anyway a picture of a wheel which had way too much bead sealant on it. I of course had to clean all that off then mount the tyres.
