S.O.R.N. and Insurance.

Can I pick a few brains ?
I was phoning around for insurance quotes yesterday and was told something by "Admiral" insurance that didnt sound right !
I have a couple of cars on a family policy and told them that I wanted to renew the insurance to cover both cars (Range Rover and M3) as they have been for the last year.
Mentioned that the M3 was SORNED and they said they dont insure cars that are SORNED ?????
It dont sound right but if it is then it might catch out a few V6 owners as I know a few of the guys SORN there's throu winter !

It would still be insured I don’t really see the problem, you wouldn’t be able to use it on the road as it wont have road tax but would still be on the MID as long as where you have told them where you keep the car overnight/during the day then its fine.

Some companies do laid up insurance which is purely insuring your car when SORN but the car wont be added to the MID this usually works out a LOT cheaper so perhaps look into this, sometimes sub £100 for 6 moths.

SORN shouldn't affect the insurance pal. Lots of members sorn theirs over the winter. If anything it should make the policy cheaper as you won't be driving it!!

I was told exactly the same thing when I was shopping around for insurance back in October. I can't remember which company told me this but it wasn't Admiral.
I didn't think it made sense either because your at less risk of something happening if your not driving it surely....

Interesting ... I wonder if say you have insurance on your car and SORN the car for part of the year whether then the insurance is still valid in case of fire and theft for example ...

I'm pretty certain that it's the person at the call center misunderstanding their guidelines.
I think the intention is that they don't give a discount or a 'laid-up' only coverage on a multi-car policy.

But I could be wrong as some (most) insurance business practices make 'little' to 'no' sense at all

Thanks for the feedback guys !
It could be down to interpretation but think it might be worth checking with your companies !
Some of the differing replies should be enough to get the alarm bells ringing !

Keep it taxed anyway - you never know when there will be a random nice sunny winter afternoon :race:
