Reverse Light Switch

Hi,

Had the mk1 for 5 days now and noticed that the reverse lights are not working :(

Ive had the green connector off the gearbox switch and used some wire to bypass the switch and both work so should be the switch, however I read somewhere that it may be the alignment of the "lever" which acts on the switch inside the gearbox and doesn't operate it. Is there a easy way to tell if its the switch i.e using a multimeter to measure the resistance of the switch open then closed, i they are different resistances surely the switch is operating ok?

Don't really want to shell out £30 for a new connector which is never going to work lol

Also is this the correct part number for the switch as found it on here from ages ago lol?

82 00 008 194 REVERSE SWITCH L2

Thanks for any help,

James

I think the alignment problem only happened for one member, where as the dodgy switch has happened for many of us. Indeed mine is due its second replacement switch when it goes in for some last gasp warranty work next week.

It'll be the switch, I'd bet the farm on it. I got mine from S G Motorsport - was cheaper than the dealer (about £15 inc post iirc) - just ring Scott, he'll sort you out :)

Right next issue :(

Fitted the new reverse light switch a couple of weeks ago and all was good, yesterday I noticed that my reverse lights were permanently on no matter what gear I was in, so either the new switch is already broken or the mechanism in the gearbox to operate it is stuck.

Any Ideas?

Thanks :approve:

It'll be the switch again I bet heh - they seem to be really THAT bad.

lol really?

Someone should update Wiki as I had a spare coil before I even collected the car but should advise people to get half a dozen spare reverse sensors too lol

Well as an indication ... I'm actually on my fourth switch. First one failed after a couple of months from new. Second one lasted until a few months back. Third one was dead on arrival and so the dealer ordered another one. Fourth one is working fine ... for now :s.

My reverse lights stopped the other month when we had the Lakes meet in Sedbergh (think it was Mr Mossy who pointed it out) - after abit of cleaning the connectors all seemed ok and they have worked ever since.

If i remember right Steve also had the same issue.

i still got the problem with reverse light not working, havent got around to doing it yet to be honest!! :(

Right removed the sensor last night and gave it a good clean and sprayed WD-40 on the mechanism and seems to be working for now lol will have to keep an eye on it as having permanent reverse lights on is like asking to be pulled over by the police :)

Could someone please help me out and let me know where i can find the switch because i have a MOT tomorrow and i have a feeling they are not going to like the reverse lights not working.
