Renault 5TS Race Car

Hi hi.
I thought I would share my new purchase. I would really love a Gordini Turbo on the road, but just cannot stretch to the asking prices at the moment, this TS is second best, and has some nice history.

I have bought and sold this car once already :D
I restored a TS when I was a teenager, which then raced in the 2004 reunion race with Maggie Anderson driving (the first ever Renault 5 race winner, in the UK). I bought a green TS from Dave Abbitt and sold it as a pair when I went to college - to Andre Severs.
Andre Restored the green one (painting it this perpermint blue) and raced the pair with his wife Samantha - 2005/2006. Andre sold the cars, and the pepermint one went to Robert Wheeler, who did a few races.
.... and I just bought it from Rob.

In Dave Abbitts hands and with my Dads building/preparation the car won the last one-make TS championship in 1997.
My Dad is gradually remembering the history, and I will speak to Dave. Hopefully I can get some more pictures.

Here is the only one I have, when it was green. I believe this was 2003... (The dark green car with yellow bumpers)

Upon collecting I have seen the reg is on both rear windows. I looked it up on the DVLA and it is described as a 1300, blue, 06/1976. The year tally's with the information on the Diamond plate (R1224), and I have found the original blue paint under the dash, along with the dark green used before. So it is an early TS which is great news.

It is very solid, although it carries some scars from racing, most of which I knew about because I remember them happening:

The roof has some dents in it, but because it went over lightly in gravel, it is only very superficial. The front outer corners have had a few light knocks, although the arches and main chassis is absolutely perfect, and the rear is super straight. The worst part is the LH rear quarter, which has filler in. I would really like to replace this panel. The RH quarter and sills are great.

It does need some work here and there. I would like to fit a period seat, like the Corbeau GT8.....
I would really, really like to put it back to the original dark blue colour.
I am definitely going to register it on the road and raise the suspension a little. Maybe attend some shows and have it for occasional fun in the summer.

The roll cage is made by 'John Aley', who started making some of the first cages in the UK, the company was bought by Safety Devices in 1972 apparently, so the cage could be original to the first TL race series?

Very nice, I remember the car when Andre had it , he did a magazine feature with them both, nice history! Very special car on the road in my opinion,.

Thanks. Yes, I think I have the article somewhere...
I have overstretched myself with finances recently, I bought a crashed GT Turbo cup car too.
So this will have to sit in the shed for a while unfortunately.

I'll apply for the V5 and trace some history in the mean time :D

Hi Sam,

I have lots of photos and history of the car, I must say the paint job is much better than when I painted it green!

I bought the car from a person in Maidstone and it still had an MOT.

I will dig out the photos and load them here.

Dave.
P.S. I might still have the old log book, I know I have at least one of the original number plates

Hi Dave!
thanks so much for posting. I would love to see Amy more photos or history you may have!
I still plan to get it back on the road.
Do you know where all the ts cup bits came from? Was it built from a smashed donor into the road shell?
my dad said he would try getting in touch with you on my behalf. Are you still racing? How are things?
Ill have to let you have a go in it when it up and running!
Sam

Ps. We still have some local newspaper clippings that mention you I think. I can email you some copies if you send me your email address.

I am having to sell this unfortunately. I would love to keep it, but I just bought an ex-rally TS that I fancy restoring and getting on the road. And I cannot justify having two...

The car is advertised at £1800 which reflects the quality of the shell and the rarity of the car - being an original TS, and from 1976. The rally car I purchased is from 1975, so they must be the two earliest TS's in the country, with only a handful know - the rarest of the Mk1's?

Having done the "Turbo" thing,if I was going to muck about with R5s again I would definitely go the TS or Coupe way.For a moment I thought that was my old rollcage.Any one seen A667RRV about? Regret selling that baby
