Re: Shortened steering rack and inner arch modification...

I seem to remember something about some spacers somewhere which could be removed to increase steering angle with the removal of arch liners - was that the same thing James ?

mike sellar sorted his rallycross v6. something also to do with longer arms...
ideally need more lock and less turns.
I'll call him and check.

Be interesting to know the width and offsets of the front wheels too as I would guess rallycross front wheels and tyres on a Vee would be slightly narrower allowing for more steering angle and lock ? ...

I guess this might apply to the road going Vee as I guess the issue is the balance between the wheel hitting the inner wheel arch v sticking out of the bodywork v clearing the caliper - has anyone tried a narrower tyre and checked clearance ? are the Mk1 issues/clearance the same with the diamter being different ?

The Rallycross V6 ran Trophy wheels which I believe are wider than the standard 7" fronts on road cars.
From memory the tyres looked a liitle wider.

Good grief :-) Yes, it never occurred to me they would be bigger with the Vee being RWD but maybe makes sense, I was probably comparing to forest/loose tyres for rallying as these tend to be narrower.

you have also talked about the front arm, is this the arm you talking about?
this is also on their site
around 300 pound i think?

Not sure on details yet.....it was only a brief mention that I didn't take much note of but I am trying to find out more.....

on their website they are translating as that's the stablize bar end link, i guess end link for the front arb maybe...

There's a page on the rally car website that details much of this but as mine (and the rallycross one) are Trophy cars, there are no arch guards or ABS units to worry about.

When I first got the car, we had the nylon steering stops and no lock. The consequence was that as soon as the car got sideways, no matter how quickly you caught it, once you hit the stops, you were a passeger and around we'd go. When we did the wheelbase change, we removed the stops and, although they don't look much, the improvement in lock is pretty substantial.

We run 8" fronts and 210x65x18 tyres and they just touch on full lock - something we have in hand for the new car.

My theory has been that the stops were 'imposed' by Renault as sudden application of large amounts of lock in an evasive action was likely to set off the pendulum at the rear - so, poor turning circle could be seen as the lesser of two evils.

Do we have the nylon steering stops or similar that could easily be removed / re-sized on the road cars?

Peter :)
