There's a page on the rally car website that details much of this but as mine (and the rallycross one) are Trophy cars, there are no arch guards or ABS units to worry about.
When I first got the car, we had the nylon steering stops and no lock. The consequence was that as soon as the car got sideways, no matter how quickly you caught it, once you hit the stops, you were a passeger and around we'd go. When we did the wheelbase change, we removed the stops and, although they don't look much, the improvement in lock is pretty substantial.
We run 8" fronts and 210x65x18 tyres and they just touch on full lock - something we have in hand for the new car.
My theory has been that the stops were 'imposed' by Renault as sudden application of large amounts of lock in an evasive action was likely to set off the pendulum at the rear - so, poor turning circle could be seen as the lesser of two evils.
