Problems getting the Air Con Regassed today

Some of you might have read my thread last week where I had a wierd problem with the climate control in that it got stuck on the max heat setting. I pulled out some fuses to check them, and in doing so must have reset something as it suddenly started to blow cold air again. Anyhow, I got a mobile air con company to come out and service/regas just to be on the safe side...

After testing, the system was half full of gas, but when he removed all the remaining gas, vacuumed the system, then filled it with fresh gas/oil, the low pressure curcuit gauge on the installation rig started to overpressure. The guy reckned there was an electical fault, which he had seen on other rear engined cars like porsches. He mentioned that the rad fans should kick in shortly after the aircon is turned on, as the fans help to circulate the gas round the system. My fans did not come on. So Ive now got to take it to an autoelectricians to have the fans tested. Just wondered if anyone on here had a good understanding of how the system works. Can anyone else comment if their rad fans kick in when the climate/AC is switched on? I know on my golf the fans start up when the ac is on.

Thanks
Dan

Had a similar issue with my Voyager, compresser making loads of noise and not working, so replaced the compressor, re gased it and once the engine was started the pressures started to rise in the system. Turns out the cooling fan was not kicking in on the rads so the gas was not being cooled down after going around the system and the pressure then went up, found the electronic switch for the fan motor was not working for either cooling the water or aircon rads. Found out later the reason my compressor was shot was because of this fault as the pressure rises the compressor has to work harder untill the electric clutch on it just burns out and you loose the air con.

Yes my fan kicks in after a minute or two depending on how hot the day is, if you were driving along in my not come on at all due the air going through the rad. I dont know if the switch working the fans on the rad is the same for the water and air con but on the clio but there is a pressure switch on one of the air con pipes that tells the car the pressures building and to switch on the fan so it could be that gone, if the fans run OK when the water gets hot.

I'm sure my fans don't kick on so this will explain why the air con works in mine for about 5minutes then blows hot air. I think my car has had every single common problem you get with these cars!

I'm pretty certain that my rad fans don't come on when my aircon is on, and my aircon has always worked perfectly from new.

Thanks Steve, this is exactly as the Air con guy suspected, so its going into an auto electrical specialist tomorrow, hopefully it will be one of the switches that is on the blink, but like you say it needs sorting quickly before the compressor lunches itself.

Dont switch on the air con then the clutch will be dis engauged and the compressor will not be turning so you cant do any damage. if there's no gas in the system the pressure switch should also stop the electric clutch on the compressor engauging anyway, no gas pressure = no electric to the clutch.

I may have a used air con switch somewhere if you need one but i think there not too much new.

Update following visit to the Autoelectrians today...

The fans and switches are all working fine. They plugged in the diagnostics and there was an error showing on the Aircon/climate flap control system, which would account for the fact that it got stuck on full heat the other week whatever the temp setting was set to.

So its now looking like the computer controller for the aircon is faulty or a problem with the climate control panel.

Wierdly the heating got stuck on full again whilst they were testing it. If fuse number 20 is removed, it resets everything and the climate control starts blowing cool air again, which suggests that the heater control box for the flaps is operating ok and its the computer that controls it that is at fault.

It's got to go back in next week. Hopefully they'll get to the bottom of it. lets hope its not a new climate control panel, I'm sure they wont be cheap!

Just been out for a wee run with air-con on, rad fans came on 5 minutes after I got home.
james, was it the rad fans that came on or was it the side pod fans? i thought the rad fans were isolated with the key off, certainly the side pod fans are independent of the ign, is the rad fan also?
