Price for an Oil change?

Will

New Member
Hello everyone, I was just wondering if anyone has any examples of what they have paid for an Oil change on their v6. I visited my local Renault Dealer today and they quoted me £130.00 + VAT to change the oil and replace the filter and any seals, they said this would be using Mobil 1 oil.

I know this is a main dealer price so is likely to be more expensive than an independent or a specialist such as SG Motorsport (who I probably would use if it was a bit nearer) but I am just trying to get an idea of what others have paid, independent or main dealer it's all useful :).

£130 doesn't sound too bad from a Renault Main Dealer. I think I was quoted approx. £200 for oil & filter change on my old 197.

You could try Rentech in Portsmouth? Most likely where I'll be taking mine in the new year.

I think it's a question of how much is someone else's time worth paying for v being able to do the job yourself in an hour or so with simple tools and providing you can lift the car safely and ideally under cover ...

For me then £130 +vat is extortionate but I guess with Mobil 1 oil, £50 would be the retail price for oil and filter ... So your paying £80 labour and about £25 vat ... Most independents will do your oil change and you can typically provide your own oil and filter so you could save money if you wanted ... Other options maybe to tie the change in with a dealer service as service deals are often better value for money ...

It is all a question of where the value is i.e. time, money, ability to do the job, peace of mind etc.

Wait, wait, wait..... There's an outside of Surrey [smilie=icon_eek.gif] lol  Thanks for the offer :), I will probably ask the local independent garage which I go to for MOT's to give me a price then make my decision.

I have done most of the other service related work myself in the past few weeks, changing the fuel filter, cleaning and re-oiling my BMC air filter etc. but I don't really fancy jacking the car up myself at home as my Jacks don't lift the car all that high and it would be a bit of a tight fit.
It is a good point you raise though :).

And thank you to everyone else who has replied.

BTW - I bought some ramps from Halfords when they sold those kits at a reasonable combined price and have to say they elevate the rear of the Vee to a good safe working height. You do need someone to line them up and stop them slipping as you reverse up them or you can secure them to the floor. The ramps are probably still a good investment on their own but I can't say I ever drove up them front-ways on !

I'm looking to do mine, Renault want £120, local garage said they'll do it for £40 if I get the gear.

What do people use? Was thinking Fuchs Titan Pro Race S 5W 40

Any other recommendations?

we charge £68 all in for Carlube 5W40 fully syn including genuine filter all labour, sump washer etc (that's our standard service oil on all RS cars, meets Renault RN700/RN710 approval, and i've tested it on our track/race cars, 100% temp and pressure stable, rarely saw over 100degC)

or if you want to supply your own oil we'll do all the graft and supply a genuine filter for £30

all inc VAT

Oil and filter change is DIY surely, even with the most basic of tools? £100+ for what is effectively unplugging a bath, changing the hair filter and filling the bath up again?!

Then go on to E-Bay for the service stamp if you absolutely have to have it... ;)

In the end I did go to Renault as my alarm went mental a couple of weeks ago and the car had to go to Renault to be fixed, the end result was being without the car for a week whilst waiting on a replacement key to be programmed and sent from France, I decided to just bite the bullet and get them to change the oil whilst they were at it.

It is something I could have done myself were I to have a bit more room in the garage and a Jack that could lift the car slightly higher or some low entry ramps, but to be honest at the time I just felt like killing two birds with one stone as the car had to stay with them for a week, as moving the car at all resulted in the most deafening alarm tone I have ever heard from a car, with absolutely no way of stopping it other than leaving the car perfectly still.

^^^ I went through the mental alarm phase as well. Mine responded to the four key turn trick and as it's garaged I don't mind the motion sensors being disabled.

Would recommend investing in a good trolley jack. I keep finding excuses to use it. Brilliant things!

I bought one of the blue low entry trolley jacks from Machine Mart that seem quite widely advertised in magazines and on the internet etc. last winter for a few other jobs, and although it worked and got the car to the height I needed for those jobs, for me to be able to work comfortably under the car in this situation I would want to raise it a bit higher, and it is at this point that the Trolley Jack sounds and feels like it physically struggling to lift the vehicle any higher.

Oh what fun it would be to own a four post ramp/lift :).

I've got one of the double valve type ones i.e pump once and it has the same effect as pumping twice. Lifts the car in about three pumps. I've not got to the end of its travel yet. Lifts ridiculously high but then again it's designed to lift 4x4s with huge tyres so it may explain it! Recommend perhaps upgrading your jack as its never good having to squeeze into a tiny gap to fiddle about underneath!
