Power Steering

My power steering kicked the bucket today.. Heard some strange noises, assumed it was somebody else's car. Turned the radio off to make sure... nothing... Continued my journey, the next slow corner I took, I really noticed. I initially thought I had a flat, but then considered that I would have heard it too. So I tested my theory and yes, it was the power steering.

What do I think?????

The car is MUCH more involving to drive, you can feel the car gripping to the road on corners at speed so you can tell when you're nearing the limits far easier than before. The only issue is slow movement manoeuvrability, but then again, I've been putting off going to the gym for ages!

So whether I have this fixed or not entirely depends on the price tag. James if you have a schematic or engineering diagrams, that would be great. Otherwise, I'm happy to have a more involving driving experience. :race:

Only info I can find on steering rack is in Section 36 Knowledge Base

I suppose you will be thinking of converting to a manual rack and removing all the PAS gubbins to prevent fluid leaks etc?

or converting to electric? LINK

my 10p's worth

if you need to remove the power steering you will need to make a idler pully to replace the power steering pump on the engine as it is part of the aux belt run.

the V6 rack is not a standard Clio part so you may have to source and special one , dont know if any clio racks are manual, dont think so, much easeir to find a secondhand rack or get yours rebuilt me thinks.

Thanks for that, I'll have a little look to see what the problem is and buy if necessary. I'd hate to buy the rack if that's not where the problem's stemmed from.

Cheers.

my power steering hose was leaking and renault got it out and rebuilt it for me
the brand new one cost a lot in hk

but yeah, the feeling was great when its unto speed without power steering, but its much heavier than a elise when parking...

You can get a similar feel if you swap to a smaller diameter steering wheel. Not much use for the OEM heads but really, really added to the feel of my car at speed and was still bearably heavy when pootling around town and parking.

This is true. Something like the RS cup steering wheel looks good and serves a good purpose.

Just a thought but I wonder if a bigger pulley on the PAS pump would give a bit more feel??. Would effectivly slow it down an reduce the ammount of assistance but not lose it completly. I drove my car with out PAS year before last. Was ok at high speed but was way too heavy at normal speeds. A rack and pinion rack and castor set up could change that.

I'm actually quite happy with the way mine feels so I'll be leaving it alone for now.

I previously compared the part numbers on the rack in the pic, with those in the parts manual. did not match? Perhaps someone (James?) with access to the full parts system could check this?

Supersession chain

Superseded (old) part number
6020011304

Selected (new) part number
6020013058
£777.91

I see the picture on the Ebay link says SMI. When looking in the parts system there are 2 options given SMI and Other.

When I choose SMI it says please consult technical manuals before fitting this type. Something only a main dealer might have info on I suspect.

I understand your Vee is with Scott now and he will look into all of this for you Matt

Yes James, it's across the border!
I've got my fingers crossed for happy face prices :) , but failing that, I can't wait to spend my xmas bonus on car maintenance [smilie=doubt.gif]
