Possible coil...

Strange thing happend on Saturday...

Just finsihed detailing the V6 to go for a drive. I knew the petrol was very low and probably about to calve so i was heading straight for the local garage about a mile away and hoping I woould make it.

Anyway I started it up to a sound only describable as a Subaru boxer engine. Interesting I thought! It sounded twice as loud but liveable with! Took off up the road and immediately noticed there was no power or very little about 50% down.

I immediatley suspected coil failure however there were/are no engine warning/emissions lights on the dash?

Headed back home after a fill up to fit my new steering wheel which required the battery to be disconnected to avoid the old airbag in face scenario.

New steering wheel on and looking good. Reconnected the battery started up and low and behold the engine was back to normal?

Its been ok since then with only one hesitant moment. Could it have been that I had run the tank soooo low it had sucked up some nasty stuff and blocked an inh injector(s) ??? Or is indeed a coil on the way out?

Why would disconnecting the battery make everything fine and dandy again though?

If you remember my fuel pump failed this time last year so I'm really hoping it isn't failing again.

Sounds like a breaking down coil, but take it for a few more drives and see if you get any flickering management lights. Anything showing on the start up diagnostic proceedure?

Took it out again this morning and the emissions light flickered on and off for 10 seconds....and it sounded like a boxer engine again!

The wife took it to my local specialist who diagnosed all 6 coils and it came up with no errors at all?

And the car iis once again driving fine after they reset the error codes?

Whats the start up diagnostic procedure?

Similar stuff happened to mine recently.

Came up with error code p0300 on the OBD.

Turned out to be oxygen sensor - or rather two of them but did not show on OBD as faulty. They had to be checked manually + you usually have a sooty exhaust pipe.

Check my earlier post for info - it also has tips for groggy when cold, ticking tappets etc

Diagnosed finally tonight as Coil NO. 6 - typical one of the awkward ones!

Have a mate beavering away tonight striping in advance of me collecting a new coil tomorrow.

It just gets better and better... [smilie=icon_cry.gif]

I only just replaced coil no 6 on 7th November and tonight another one is away?

Is this normal?

Do these engines not like mixing old and new coils? I bought the replacement coil at Euro Car parts as it was cheaper?

I've also noticed that my trip computer hasn't been working since and the engine temp clock is always reading bang on the middle of the dial even when its cold?

Can anyone offer any advice? :s

When I've had a coil go down another one went the very next day [smilie=icon_eek.gif] [smilie=icon_eek.gif] - this has happened to me twice now so I guess it's more than just coincidence :s I've used the Peugeot coils as a replacement and (fingers crossed) none of these have failed as yet :D :D

Just a quick question, which warning light comes on if it's a coil gone? I had the orange warning light come on this morning to the right of my speedo near the seatbelt light. The engine sounded a bit rough but not sure if that was my imagination!

its the engine management light, (actually looks like an engine which is out of the car)

but it might flash first then stay on all the time and you would definately know if a coil has gone as the engine loses all power even if only 1 cylinder isnt firing.

hope this helps
